In this video I outline the "quick and dirty" technique outlining how to back up your Wordpress sites. This is using the Tools Import and Export features that are native to Wordpress.

Some of the topics that I cover within this video are:

(1) The importance of backing up your website
(2) How to Export and organize your file
(3) Why you should always record the name of your "theme"
(4) How to get your website back if it ever goes down
(5) Using the Tools => Import function and installing the necessary plugin

If you have any questions about backing up your website or how to use the Tools Import/Export function within Wordpress, let me know and I will be more than happy to give you a hand.

You'll have better help if you send this through Site Support under the Site Rubix menu.

I would think it would all work if you followed all the instructions properly but if you sent your export file to Site Support, they may know what's wrong.

.xml exports only export the blog. To get the whole website, you need to get into FTP and download the wp-content folder.

If you are transferring a website, try WP Clone You can also refer to this training post:

Kyle says to create a folder where you store all your back ups. Isn't it necessary to have just the last back-up? Why are important the older ones too?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
You only need the last one. I personally keep the last two but one is all you need. Kyle was referring to a folder where you store the backups of multiple websites.

That was really helpful. Since there is a possibility for your website to break, you have to back it up. Just to make sure!

I have this one problem - after the back-up was done successfully, I cannot open it to see the HTML. It gives me the message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel"

However, when using the "open with" option, IE. Microsoft Edge, I am able to see the file in its entirety.

Will this have any effect when I when I re-upload? Or should I try something else?

Hello Andre, I can't help you with your question, I hear a lot of people are backing up there websites, but the advantage of being a premium member is that WA is backing up all websites of premium members, so the only back-up you really need is from the last written posts, because WA backs-up once in the 2 days.

Can file compression/extraction software such as WinRAR be safely used on the Exported WP file? Will the resulting integrity of the extracted file be maintained and produce a successful Import step should this ever be necessary to replace a corrupted website?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
That's an interesting question. I have always distanced myself from compressing exported WP files simply because I didn't want to possibly cause any kind of corruption.
Reply
NWTDennis Premium
My concern exactly. I put the question up in my "My Questions" but have only received one response so far. It will compress and extract ok, but site files are usually not very big so why compress it jvranjes said.

I tried to go around the WinRAR choice, but can't find a way to just save my WP site download to a file on my Firefox desktop. Kyle's WP Export/Import procedure sends the file to MS Explorer. Then I chose Select All and Copy, but when I click back to my browser (Firefox) there is no "Save" choice in the right click window ... only WinRAR choices.

I'm thinking about removing WinRAR, which I really do not use, to see if Kyle's procedure works as described.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Why not just save your export file to a folder somewhere on your computer? When I do an Export I have it save directly into my downloads folder on my computer.

Thanks Boomer ... that worked. I think I'm still a little intimidated by some of this stuff. KISS ... right? Have a great day.

If it is nothing, then no prob, just let me know but if I need to fix something, then please let me know, and how.

thx a ton team! :-)

I'm not sure what that error is, It is hard for me to see. I have never had an error with the export back up but, that type of back up will only back up your content, not any settings made to your theme
You may want to contact support in case there is anything wrong.

You could build a new one with your site. It will delete everything you have on it if that is what you want to do. I had a site with hostgator, Had content on it but when I switched it over to WA, I build another one and lost everything. That's what I wanted to do.

Okay Great tutorial. I have two suggestions on backups, the quick and easy way.1. Instead of just clicking the download export file, right click on it and you can "Save as" put the file where you want to put it. 2. Add the theme and date to the end of the file name before you hit save. Then you always know both the theme and date of that backup.

the install themes seems to have changed from this video, they are asking for a file to be uploaded - where do we get this - for example if I want to change to platform, it tells me it is not there, I must upload - from where?
Reply
Labman Premium
You will get the theme from its supplier. There can be many sources for that. They will give you a downloaded zip file to put on your computer. You will upload to your site from your computer.

This resource may help. http://onlinelabguy.com/whats-a-wordpress-theme-and-how-to-choose

if WA offers us the themes, and we want to change to something else - how do we download from the 2000+ available to us at WA?

your site certainly answers stuff I had been wondering about!
Reply

For free themes, Go to WordPress.org. Choose the theme you want and click download. You will then have the theme in a zip file on your computer. Go to your site, click Appearance>>Themes and at the top is an upload tab. Click that, browse for the file you just saved and select it. Then upload to the site. Activate the new theme.

@Moz, the themes are accessible from within the WP dashboard. There's a tab up top in the theme area that allows you to search for them. You shouldn't have to manually upload any of the free themes.
Reply
MozMary Premium
@Nathaniell, could something have changed in the wp updates? When I access that box on the dashboard it asks for a name then it asks me to upload the file.
As it is, on the sites I created some months ago, they all seem to have a small selection of themes I can click, dunno how some of them got there, seems to be what I was trying day one, but cannot upload any more to that small selection now without that box asking me to upload a file...which it now seems I have to get on another site.

yes, different, it now says search installed themes, it gives the number of how many you have on there already and an option to add new - in which case you need the file to upload it- so thanks for the youtube link, will be checking

Anyone doing this should also consider backing the website up to a site such as dropbox or google drive. In addition to this I would still use a plugin designed for backing the site up because the WP built in version won't do an exact restoration. However it will stop you from having to start from scratch.

My question is...... I see how it will import all your content down to the comments, however, what about the subscribers I have to my website.
With the lessons that I have been taught here, and now with the traffic I am receiving, I have many subscribers to my site. Other backups that I have done and had to use have not brought back subscribers of my page. Should I just record their names and emails to re submit later?
Or should this process restore all my subscribers as well?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
It should back up all the files, including the subscribers
Reply
wombat2 Premium
To be on the safe side, record all the names and emails of your subscribers separately in a word document since the re-install does not re-establish your site completely to its original format. You will need to perform some editing. I would take screen shots too of the website to jog your memory as to how everything was laid out on the pages

Reply

Yes Kelly, but if you wanted to go back to an older point of your site, you'd keep it. So if you had 20 pieces of content on update 3, and you had 25 pieces of content at update 4, if you added 4 more pieces of content and then you lost everything and you didn't like update 4, you could go get update 3. However, that would rarely be the case as you'll always really want the most recent update.

Very interesting information. Thank you Kyle. I was wondering. Would Google frown on duplicate websites being created in such a way? I'm not referring to back up purposes. Not that I'm going to do this, but has this been done before? Creating more than one site that has the same content under different domain names? I'm curious about that is all.
Reply
Carson Premium
Hey April,

Creating duplicate sites with the same content on them is not suggested as this creates duplicate content, however when you are moving your website from one web host to another and when the duplicate content will be temporary, this is perfectly fine.

The ORIGINAL website will always remain in good eyes in Google. Someone cannot copy your website and harm your rankings, Google realizes this and the will not harm your site if you are the original owner of the content.
