Google, from time to time, rolls out updates and a recent one started from 4th May 2020. Industries that were most affected by the updates include Travel, Real Estate, Health, Pets & Animals, People & Society.
These stated industries saw the biggest changes in ranking even though they were not the only ones that were affected. Google rounded up on 18th May 2020 and changes from the updates based on announcements from Google and indications from webmasters include:
- Introduction of Core Web Changes
- E-A-T is extremely important
- Search Intent
- Consideration for No-follow Links
1. Introduction of Core Web Changes
In its official statement for the May update, it brought in some new metrics regarded as Core Web Vitals which include loading speed, the responsiveness of a site, and other indices as they relate to performances of websites on desktops and mobile devices.
From Google, we understand that these core web changes cover the page load times, level of interactivity, and the structure of your content. I won’t consider this to be really new information to webmasters but Google now allows webmasters to see how their core web changes perform as a separate report.
Sites that loaded very fast got a boost to their ranking, while some slow loading sites dropped in ranking. Having too many videos and images on a site can contribute to slow loading speed.
Note that Google takes note of how your website performs for both desktop and mobile devices and that they will accord priority to pages that give the best information even if some other aspects of the pages are not up to the best standards.
This indicates that while showing the importance of web changes, the content remains a priority to them. If you have the best page setup without having outstanding and relevant content, you will not be given the same type of priority as a website with great and superb content.
