Ever since humans started the business of trading commodities, there has always been the need to reach out to the market and inform them about products on sale. The earliest recorded means of reaching out was word of mouth where information is passed from one person to the other. Incidentally, word of mouth still remains the most effective means of advertising.
At one point in history, the printing machine was invented and people were able to print on papers. The same papers were used to disseminate information to the public. They were used for public good, for propaganda by ruling authorities, religious reasons, and by businesses that were out to inform the public about their goods.
Then there was the introduction of radio and TV into mainstream media, and business owners quickly exploited this medium to advertise their products and services.
Some of these media are still running today, even though the introduction of the internet and its prominence in our lives has pushed other forms of public media to the back. The need for businesses to advertise their products and services still exists today. In fact, the need is much stronger now because there is much more competition in virtually every business niche.
