So I typed the file type ".xml"(don't forget the dot) at the end of the filename and clicked on Test Sitemap again.

This time it worked!

I clicked on Submit Sitemap with "sitemap-index.xml" showing in the box and I had a sitemap for my website in Google Webmaster Tools.

TO RECAP:

  • If "sitemap" doesn't work in All in One SEO use "sitemap-index"(remember the dash)
  • Have your website setup in Google Webmaster Tools before trying to add the sitemap
  • Put ".xml"(remember the dot) at the end of the filename in Google Webmaster Tools

If you are having a problem with an "http general error 404 - not found" please continue.to the next page.

You can use All-in-One SEO to generate your sitemap for you. You can also verify your site vis All-in-One SEO, Kyle gives training on how to do so, just use the search bar above.

The sitemap is showing me that I have 156 pages when actually I have only 3, it seems that it is taking all the tags that I have added and showing them as pages, is this normal?

This is amazing!! Thank you for sharing this, I've been looking for this information for 2 weeks now and have gotten nowhere until this! I am mostly finished with setting up my sitemap now except for 1 thing:

I am getting the "http general error 404 - not found" response when I try to test my sitemap in Google Search Console. But my sitemap, when I view it through WordPress, does not look like yours, so I'm having a hard time figuring out what's wrong with my URLs.

Here is a screenshot, I hope this helps explain my confusion.

Someone will probably be along to help but you could also send your problem to Site Support, they are super clever and helped me out with a techy problem I was at my wits end with.

Thanks! Good points :), I've never used Site Support before I need to try it out.

I'm having this problem. Been months since I did the initial setups. Where and how do I correct the sitemap address in Word Press (which I find very confusing).
In Google Analytics under "Crawl" subhead "Sitemaps," it shows an error message. It lists my site as "http:///boomermuscle.com"
There is an extra / in there and it does not show https since that change was made.

Hi Sorry I took so long to reply.
I assume you have solved this, but if not you need to create a new property in the Search Console.
Here is a link which contains a link to Jay's video which explains this.

Thanks Pat. Well done. I didn't seem to have this issue. When I checked my AIOseo sitemap, I had not had it activated. After activation, I updated it and notified google, bing, etc. Then I went to google webmaster tools console and typed in sitemap.xml and it seemed to find it no problem so then I submitted it.

According to AIOSeo, In order to create a static sitemap.xml on your site, you will need to uncheck the option "Dynamically Generate Sitemap" or it will not create the sitemap.xml file, it will place the link within the robots.tx file. So i unchecked the option and it created a static file on the site. Google had no problems with it after I unchecked that option.

Appreciate the info Pat!
