So I typed the file type ".xml"(don't forget the dot) at the end of the filename and clicked on Test Sitemap again.

This time it worked!

I clicked on Submit Sitemap with "sitemap-index.xml" showing in the box and I had a sitemap for my website in Google Webmaster Tools.

TO RECAP:

  • If "sitemap" doesn't work in All in One SEO use "sitemap-index"(remember the dash)
  • Have your website setup in Google Webmaster Tools before trying to add the sitemap
  • Put ".xml"(remember the dot) at the end of the filename in Google Webmaster Tools

If you are having a problem with an "http general error 404 - not found" please continue.to the next page.

I got my issue fixed in Google. I check Bing next, but why does Kyle not use the All-in-One SEO plugin for this?

Thanks for this post.
