Still having problems?
Are you still getting a "http general error 404 - not found"? If so, can you view the sitemap by clicking on the "view sightmap" link near the top of the sitemap screen?
If the sitemap is there, but Google can't find it, there is probably something wrong with the URL of your sitemap. Check that the URL in the address bar matches the sitemap name you are typing into Google. For an example see the screenshot of the sitemap URL below:
There is an extra ".xml".
If you typed in a ".xml" after "sitemap-index" when you updated your sitemap in WordPress - it won't match the sitemap name you are typing into Google. This is because an ".xml" is added by WordPress when the sitemap is generated.
Correct any differences you find between the URL on your sitemap (just the part after http or https://"your sitename"/) and the sitemap name you are typing into Google.
Please note, there are other settings connected to the sitemap and Google Webmaster. This lesson is only about fixing the setup problem and there might be other settings you want to adjust to get it to work as you want it to in Google Webmaster.
I hope this works for you, as well as it worked for me. If like this training and found it helpful please click the green "like" button below. Thanks
I was able to submit a good site map to both Google and Bing..
Thank you
