You sign up to an affiliate program like you would with any other program. So, for instance, you would go to Amazon's affiliate program page and just sign right up. They will then provide you links to their products that have your personal tag on it. If a customer gets to the website through the link they provided to you, Amazon will know about it. This works the same for all affiliate programs, from Amazon to Wealthy Affiliate itself.

When the customer then purchases the linked product, you get paid. Let me say that again: if you send a customer to an affiliate site through a link the affiliate provided you, and that customer then purchases the product, you get paid. Each and every time. Each and every customer.
Say you link to an Amazon product on your website (a product relevant to your site, of course) worth $10. Amazon gives you 15% commission off every sale, remember?
100 customers who were sent to Amazon from your link buy that product. You've just earned $150.

Not to sound mushy, but this was the sweetest and actually comforting definition of a concept, a thing, that holds a lot of mystery, maybe some intimidation, for those who've been standing on the outside alone. The best cure for isolation is to step forward and put your hand out, maybe even say hello. Or, read posts like we encounter here and begin to understand that we've all been beginners. Once you've posted the first time, you've already gotten some experience. And then, the mystery starts to fade away....I hope that helps someone.
