I spent two hours on the phone one on one with a Twitter consultant today. She is amazing and extremely credible. After being on Twitter since the beginning (2009), she knows all the do's and don'ts of social media. She is a published author, an ex-Google exec, and a very cool person. I thought I'd share the two most important tips I learned:

Prior to getting 2,000 followers, you need to:

Follow 150 people per day. The key is to follow the "right" people. Follow people who have large followings, aren't spam marketers, and understand the importance of engaging. Every three days, go back and unfollow the ones folks that didn't follow you back. If you do this for 30 days, you will have 2,000 good followers.

Once you've reached that, go over to Klout.com. Sign up for a free account. You can post tweets to be held and released on a schedule. It will tell you the best time to post tweets according to topic, and automatically do it for you. Plus, you can share your content for others to tweet as well. I'd never heard about Klout.com prior to today. She said it is old news but now that I know, I think it's very cool!

Of course you can use klout.com prior to reaching the Twitter goal of 2,000 but you won't gain traction on retweets or content sharing.

There is a lot more to Twitter than this but if you are already using it, you already know how important engagement, not spamming, and not being a self proclaimed expert is to create a good following.
