I Need Direction or I am Absolutely Going to Fizzle Out
I've been here with Wealthy Affiliate since October of last year. I chose my niche and built a website.
However, even though I have known since I chose the "spa culture" niche, that it wasn't going to be an easy journey, it has in fact turned out to be an arduous task that I'm no longer passionate about.
I have some affiliate links, which even if I sold twenty a day, would bring in very little income. The way I thought make money was through some higher priced products such as resort and retreat bookings. Significantly easier said than done I discovered.
I was surprised a month ago when a European company approached me and asked me to write a feature article on their product - a salt cave. I was excited about it because if I were to become an affiliate of theirs the commissions would be very high. I chatted with one of the owners on the phone and she informed me that while she would like me to write the article about her company, which is a world wide franchise, she couldn't afford to pay me to write it. AND she would have to talk to her husband - the co-owner - about the possibility of me having an affiliate link on my website so as to earn money. Why I ask you would I put forth the effort to write an indepth article about something that could do little for my site or bank account?
I was also asked to write about a spa in Southern California, in which I was told if someone were to book a spa day or days with them, they would have to be on the honor system in order for me to receive a cut.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
So here's what I'm thinking. I'll keep the spa site - aspaforeveryone.com, but I will start another site that would have a realistic outcome of making money.
I've been thinking about selling diamonds - or getting into the entire engagement/wedding industry using the vehicle of diamonds. I have a more specific niche set in my head.
But to be honest, my passion is comedy - I love creative, funny people. I once tried to land a job writing for Conan O'Brien. But seeing as that I don't live in New York City, it's a hard sell to try and work from my home in Montana.
Is there a niche for comedy and Internet marketing?

Hi Tina,
When choosing a niche you are choosing to build a website that will deliver information that people are looking for.
If "Comedy" is your passion, then you need to research what people are looking for related to "comedy" and how you can help them with your website. You want to be specific so that you can deliver targeted info.
You've been having a tough time because you didn't choose a niche to begin with. "Spa Culture" is not a niche, it's far too broad and I'm sure there are 100's of things within the "Spa" industry that you could target where people are after information.
Once you know exactly what your audience is looking for, it's easy to create content to help them. And...it's easy to align some affiliate products and services to recommend on your site.
Here is a great blog post by Kyle that will help you better understand how to find a niche:

Also, this post that explains the biggest 5 mistakes people make when choosing a niche.

I think these will really help you!

Sometimes it is difficult to decide what we want to do when we grow up. Creative people can handle multiple projects. So, the Spa one is a start. (Tell them the only way you can write an accurate article is by spending a few days at their spa. On their dime, of course.) I liked the diamond and caddy idea too, creative once again. I just did a quick check at clickbank on Comedy. Yep, you guessed it Multiple listings. Five $20,000 sites may be easier to make a hundred grand than just one. Others will disagree but I say : What are you waiting for?
Interesting question. I will send you a pm.
Rick
Oh, do you by chance remember your message to me the other day?
I meant to add that I would love some feedback on the whole diamond idea as well as the comedy niche possibility.
In addition, I would appreciate it if Kyle and/or Carson would please chime in with suggestions, criticisms, accolades. Thank you in advance.
Well, Tina Turnover, I also love witty, creative people - maybe you could start a site where you interview standup comics....some who have made it, those struggling, and those thinking they want to give it a shot. Just an idea....some of them might like/need the free exposure online.
My first niche site was also something I truly did not have enough passion to pursue....oh, yeah, excited when I got started, but every day it just died a little...so, I know exactly what you mean.
About the writing gigs, did you ask either of these generous souls if there was any immediate incentive for you to open a vein and write them something they wished you to do totally on spec??? Wow, some people have more crust than a potpie.....
Keep us posted, k? And that's my two cents for today...
Suz
There were no immediate incentives at all. Just blood, sweat and tears on my part and the hope that they would allow me the privilege of being an affiliate after I wrote the article(s). Thank you much for the encouragement. It was well worth a heck of a lot more than 2 cents.
There is a lot out there to sell. Remember you can sell Wealthly Affiliate as well. I use ardysslife.com/wellbeing and I am checking out http://www.karatbars.com/ ?s=teejay1. The Karat bar is interesting but I only use this as an affiliate and have not purchased anything, it is tricky. Read before you sign up on anything.
I love comedy as well, I go to shows all the time - I joke around all the time so I understand your passion.
I think there could be - you mentioned how you applied to be a writer for the Conan O'Brien show - this could be your angle (niche) in comedy. I'm thinking maybe everything that's involved in process of writing for comedy - or something along those lines.
Just doing a quick search I found a few sites that are related to comedy - maybe this can give you some ideas.
http://connectedcomedy.com/
http://www.creativestandup.com/
I also found some affiliate programs related to comedy, not sure what they are like - but I wanted to show you there are affiliates out there in this niche:
http://www.killerstandup.com/affiliates/
http://comedyknockout.com/
http://www.thatscomedy.com/ap/jokebook.htm
Hope this helps
I believe in you
Leo
I've bookmarked all the links you gave me. Going to check them out when I'm not worn out with worrying about niche ideas. Thanks Leo.
i can understand your frustration, but i really think that if you put your mind into it you can really earn from it. how about you sell scripts? create a website offering your services and on the side sell some amazon books in kindle or paperback that you enjoy along with movies that delights people. just think about 9gag.com where their main brand is humor but yours is more mature and classy. :) good luck!
There is a niche for anything your heart desires pick something you are passionate about and you will make it work! Best wishes to you!

A lot of people switch gears and change their niche after they have been going for a while. You can absolutely follow anything that you choose. However, to make money it is smart to have some higher commission products in your lineup.
Suppose you found some things on Amazon you wanted to promote. Since Kyle used the vitamix blender let us think about that niche for a bit. It is high priced so it would be a good commission. But you are not going to sell high priced products everyday. Some people need the best quality blender out there as it will receive heavy use. Others just need something for once in a while and a cheaper model is all they need.
What else might you need to go with a blender? Maybe a good spatula set or some other low priced items. By including low priced items in your offering you will sell more products and your commission rate will be higher.
I know nothing about the comedy niche but do know that if you can insert some comedy into your writing you are likely to gain a following of people. That can help get you second or third visits plus your posts will be shared more often.
Just don't fizzle out on us. You are a very talented person. Make the adjustments that are right for you and keep going. Best wishes to you. Take care.
Glenda
