If you have installed all in 1 SEO plugin, you don't need to put whole code in your theme header. Simply go seo plugin >> general settings >> scroll down and you will find a box to enter Google analytic code. Don't enter whole code just enter one bold highlighted on your analytic home page. Let me know if it helps.
Thanks for responding, skmali! I was able to find out where to place it in my theme header and it is now tracking. But I think I'll try placing it in the SEO plugin on my other site as you suggested, it seems easier and less likely to damage the site by placing the code in the wrong place.
Thanks again for your help!
Update:
I thought I had put the code in the correct place on the header and Google analytics seemed to recognize it and be tracking my site. But I've just learned while trying to sign up for the Google webmaster tools, that the code is actually not in the correct place.
So, I've decided to try your method of putting the code into the SEO plugin, however, I'm not sure what you mean by:
"Don't enter whole code just enter one bold highlighted on your analytic home page."
Ok, so enter only code that look like UA-xxxxx-1. this is your analytic tracking code for SEO plugin.

Hi TiyeGM. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the header file and you should see the code in the screenshot I've attached to this comment. Try pasting the script code between the header and php tags. Let me know if this works.
Thanks electrobot, this worked out fine though it took awhile to register. I was just afraid of putting it in the wrong place and breaking my site!

I keep getting a message asking if I'm a 'bot' and to answer a simple math question which I answer, but then it just takes me to my actual site instead of to the wordpress dash
I saw somebody with this same problem about two weeks ago. Do you have the jetpack plug-in? If you do then that is where your problem is coming from.
Help. I can't log in to my site from wa. can anyone help?
