Been dreading it, but time for a BIG change - New Theme
I've been dreadng this because I knew the time was gonna come and it looks like it's now. I purchased a theme years ago long before I was in the WA community. I purchased it form ThemeFuse, a popular site to buy themes and such. The theme was "The Practice" and I really liked the look of it and how it was laid out.
Well awhile ago the theme or the company of the theme or something sold out to another company by the name of Brizy I believe and they no longer support or update the theme. So now if there are any changes to Wordpress or plugins, etc... my theme may be compromised or not optimized to for Google, etc...
After running the Google Page Speed tool on my site today, it received a dismal 15. That is way in the red. I ended up deleting the video on the front page and getting rid of a plugin or 2 and I got the score up to 48.
That is still a horrible score! I did contact support to see what else I could do and they immediately came back with contacting the creator of the theme. I knew then it was time to change themes. It's gonna be a pin since who knows exactly what is gonna happen to the look of the site. Also there is a chance of losing content.
Luckily I know that I can create a duplicate of the site and I asked support if they can create a "staging area" for me and they knew right what I was talking about.
They are gonna duplicate my site and put it on the server, but it will be under a different web address. I will have a new login and I can go in there and change it to a WA theme I pick or I could upload another custom theme if I want. This way I can make changes and see what happens and if it takes me ahwile to get it to where I like it, I will still have my original site up at it's current state and I will have all my content.
Once I get the new site how I like it, they will move it over and hopefully my site will be faster and score bettter and in turn hopeuflly the Google gods will be happy and reward me a little bit.

I just did a preview using Generate Press and my site would need some serious work to get it looking right. I don't think I will be able to use it.
I recently changed mine to Generate Press. Highly recommend it.
I was very skeptical when changing because I was so used to my old theme and I had done so much work on it but it was an easy switch. Now my Website is so clean

Changing themes on here is not bad, but since you already had yours, perhaps it is a bit trickier. Your plan sounds like it will work.
Too bad Generate Press won't work. I like the theme; use it on two of my three websites. If you try others and find they will all take some work, you might be wise to go back to Generate Press. Bummer! Not fun, but you will get it figured out.
