A Little Change & Email Marketing

This is kind of an update post and I'm also acting for a little guidance I guess.
First, Going Against The Advice Of A Pro
I watched the live training "Writing Awesome Content That Ranks" awhile ago and learned some things when it comes to writing my articles / Posts. I'm glad I've watched it and I have definitely been implementing the tips Jay laid out in the video.
One thing bothered me though. Someone in the video asked if they should go back and change older posts to conform to the way Jay was showing us on how to write them. He pretty much said nah, don't worry about it. Well, that was on my mind for days. I just couldn't get over it. The more I thought about it, the more it didn't make sense to me. I mean his tips and tricks to writing the article were pretty straight forward. Just the keyword you are using in the title and nothing else. Keyword in the first paragraph of the post. Have a link from an authority type site like Wikipedia, etc... in your post, etc... etc... etc...
After thinking about this, I was like If all my older posts are wrong and sitting out there stuck in position 40, 50, or higher in the search rankings, that was a lot of time and effort I put into them and my return on that effort isn't paying off. Why wouldn't I want to go fix them?

Screw It, I'm Gonna Do It
As the headline says, I said screw it and I just did that. I have somewhere around 70 posts or so and I have started going in starting from the oldest first and editing all my posts. I'm actually almost done doing this. It's not really taking long because I'm not changing the "meat" of the body. I'm not writing new content, I'm just changing the title and updating meta info if need be and adding an authority link to each post and making sure all my images have the correct keyword in the alt section. That's it. I guess we will see what happens. Wish me luck!
Here's Where I Need Some Advice And Recommendations
I'm gonna start trying to capture emails and do email marketing. If you could, could you leave any advice, comments, things you learned down below that would help me get on the right path! I'm thinking MailChimp, but I'm just going by what I've seen people do on here and it seems to be the most popular. Can I set that up with options, etc...? I mean can I have the user select things like if they are a male or female etc...? My site is a boot site and it would be nice when I send emails that I'm sending women's boot info to the women and men's boot info to the guys?
Should I have a pop up on every page when the viewer visits? I'm thinking I should because who knows how the visitor got to the site. They may never actually get to the home page. Is this setup where once they get the pop up, they don't get it again while visiting other pages on the site? I hope so. Otherwise that would definitely be very bothersome in my opinion if I was a visitor.
Anything else you can thing of? Is the FREE version worth it? Is there a better plugin out there I should know of?
Thanks for reading and any advice!
