Write a Great First Sentence
In my last post, I made the point that every heading is a promise, and the first sentence is the delivery. Blow it, and you lose momentum. Nail it, and your post carries weight from start to finish.

Someone asked me in the comments how to actually do this. My advice was simple: test it. Take your opening sentence, drop it into GPT, and ask for ways to improve it without losing your voice. Then ask for five alternatives. You’ll be surprised at what you get back. Sometimes you’ll stick with your original. Sometimes one of the rewrites will spark something better. Either way, you’ll sharpen that critical first line.
So what makes a strong opener? It’s definitely not about being flashy. It’s more about being clear, direct, and impossible to ignore. I often use the analogy "A slap to the face. " To capture attention, you can:
- Start with a problem your reader knows too well.
- Ask a question they can’t scroll past.
- Drop a fact or blunt statement that forces attention.
- Lead directly into the payoff that your post will deliver.
The goal is always the same: earn the second sentence.
If you practice this one step every time you write, your content instantly stands taller. Just be gentle with the initial slap to the face and try not to knock them out. Ideally, if you smack them, just capture their attention, not going for the knockout, you want them to be able actually to continue reading!
Don’t just write to fill space. Respect the reader, and they’ll respect you back.
