Temporary Processing Error: Should You Worry?
One minute you’re just checking in on your site using Google Search Console, and the next thing you see is a temporary processing error staring back at you.
Sitemaps: Temporary Processing Error
Yeah, it sounds serious. But honestly? It’s usually nothing to worry about. So calm down.
Allow me to explain what could have happened.

What’s Going On?
When Google tries to check out your sitemap, the file that tells it what pages live on your site, sometimes it hits a speed bump or roadblock. That’s what this error is: just a hiccup. It means Google couldn’t read the file right now, but it might work fine in five minutes from now.

This doesn’t mean your site is broken, so do not panic. It doesn’t mean Google hates you, so calm down. It just means something didn’t load right, and they’ll probably try again soon.
Why It Happens
A few common reasons:
- Your server was being slow or overloaded
- Your sitemap took too long to respond
- Googlebot was blocked (by accident)
- There was a brief DNS glitch
- Something timed out during the request
It's almost like when you reload a webpage and get a "502 Bad Gateway" error. It happens sometimes, just bad timing, and nothing you did wrong. It's just fate, so there's no need to worry.
If I lost you with the 502 example, a 502 is as simple as well; it means there is a communication breakdown between servers on the internet. This is also no fault of yours, and you should not worry if you see it!
What You Can Do
Here’s how to handle it:
- Open your sitemap directly in your browser. Does it load normally? If yes, cool.
- Hit "Resubmit" in Search Console. Takes two seconds.
- Wait 24–48 hours. These things usually fix themselves.
- Check for firewall rules or plugins that might be blocking bots.
- Look at your robots.txt file. Make sure you're not accidentally blocking the sitemap.
Here is how: enter (Example) https:yoursite.com/robots.txt in your search bar - It should look something like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow:
Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
This is what you want to see, User-Agent with a “*” and nothing behind Disallow
- It should look something like this:
Still showing the error after a few days? Then it's time to dig a little deeper and look for issues that may be preventing Google from seeing your post.
No Big Deal (Most of the Time)
The truth is, this is one of those little errors that looks a lot worse than it really is. If everything else is running smoothly, like Google is indexing your other pages, your traffic to your other pages looks steady, this isn’t the end of the world. Just be patient and allow it time to correct itself.
Just keep an eye on it. Resubmit and carry on with your life as usual. I hope this explains what a temporary processing error is and helps alleviate some of your stress.
