Don't Just Collect AI Prompts. Learn to Build Them.

I spend a lot of time reading online. Today I will be discussing a topic I keep seeing debated. That is whether you should build a massive prompt library or simply copy and paste prompts that other people share.

Personally, I think there's a better approach.

Sure, save prompts that catch your attention. I do it too. But before you add one to your collection, take a minute to actually read it.

Not just the first sentence.

Read the entire prompt and figure out why it works.

Breaking down an AI prompt to understand how each section contributes to the final output.

When you find a prompt worth saving, ask yourself:

  • What role or point of view is the model being given?
  • What context did the prompt include?
  • What output format did it request?
  • What constraints or guarails did it put into place ?
  • Did it provide any examples? If Not, why?
  • What style words or references made the output more specific?
  • Which parts could I reuse in my own projects?

Before long, you'll start noticing that many of the best prompts follow the same basic building blocks. What changes is how those blocks are arranged to solve a specific problem.

Those questions will teach you far more than collecting another hundred prompts you'll probably never look at again.

Know this, prompts do not have to be 5000 words long to be effective. I have found the shorter more focused ones often perform better.

Once you've broken the prompt apart, take the time build your own version of it.

Adapt it to your own workflow, your own writing style, and the type of content you actually create. Then test it. Tweak it, and test it again.

Comparing multiple AI outputs while refining a prompt through testing.

This is where you begin to understand the why and how a prompt works and gives you what you are asking for in return.

I've copied plenty of prompts over the past couple of months, and I've found that some of them eventually started producing very similar patterns in the output. The wording was different, but the structure, tone, and even some of the ideas began to feel familiar and/or repetitive.

It was only after I broke a few of them down, I understood exactly how those prompts were built, and how I could make small adjustments to keep the results feeling fresh. More importantly, I knew exactly what to change because I understood every part of the prompt.

After you've spent enough time working with GPT or really any large language model for that matter, you'll probably know exactly what I'm talking about because you have seen it too.

The interesting thing is that prompting is a skill, just like writing, photography, or keyword research. The more you practice it, the better you become. Every prompt you analyze teaches you something you can apply to the next one.

This is the sentence readers are most likely to remember

One final thought.

If you're happy copying prompts and getting acceptable results, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it's the fastest way to get started, especially if you're new to AI.

But if your goal is to become genuinely good at working with AI instead of simply using AI as a crutch, learning why a prompt works is far more valuable than simply collecting hundreds of them.

A prompt library can be a great resource.

However, understanding how to build your own prompts is a skill you'll use for years, no matter which AI model or platform you choose.
