Imagination is King
When I was twelve years old, I saw how fun it could be to play baseball and decided I wanted to try it for myself. My neighborhood at the time was located on the outer edge of Tucson, AZ. It was as far south as it was West and quite frankly in the middle of nowhere.
My home sat near the end of a cul-de-sac that for some reason didn't have enough houses built to fill the street. This left a rather large area that I envisioned as a baseball field. I stood out there one summer and imagined the potential.
Of course, that area was largely forgotten by builders and all sorts of desert wildlife inhabited it. Prarie dog holes, weeds, and a lot of rocks. Determined to play a game of baseball I talked to my friends and told them of my idea. They all looked at me like I had lost my mind. I still get that look from time to time today.
I convinced my brother and closest ally that we should clear the area and create bases. Early in the summer morning I would wake my brother and gather a rake, shovel, and hoe. We would work for about an hour before taking water breaks. We removed the largest of rocks and the biggest of bushes. After about three days of steady work we had what looked like a rough diamond.
I invited all of my friends to come play on my field and found that they all had criticisms. The bases are too far apart, and there are still too many rocks. They however, now began to see my vision and began to help me clear some of the area.
We had a few games there eventually, everyone was happy, even though we had no grass. We had no formal bases and the farthest reaches of our field was a large wash. I look back now and think wow, some of those ground balls were dangerous! They would come at us and suddenly hit a rock and damn near pop us in the face.
After a few games, one of our neighbors, whom I found out later was an engineer, built padded bases for us. Eventually there came a day when construction began anew in that corner we called our baseball field.
This whole endeavor was an amazing thing that came from imagination. Albert Einstein once was quoted as saying,
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”I love this quote because it reminds me to keep on imagining a better place to live, work, and play. I am currently building my site but have not generated enough content. I hope to share more with you soon.
I hope you all have an amazing day of website building and imagining.
