Money isn't everything. Is it?

They say you learn your money habits from your parents. My mother worked very hard to take care of my sister and I. She sheltered us from money problems by teaching us that money isn't as important as family and that I shouldn't carry bad feelings around never having enough.

I internalized that teaching into the belief that I would never let money 'rule' me and accepted 'there's never enough money' as 'normal'. So throughout part of my life, I was always 'just barely' getting by and on a treadmill trying to get the next job with more money... I never went hungry and I never lived on the streets but I was firmly planted in the 'rat race.'

Although I lived an adventurous life allowing art and love to 'rule my direction, a pattern emerged of anguish around money. I knew there was something more to life. I did some deep soul searching, did lots of forrest yoga, read a good number of books, talked to a bunch of people and came to a conclusion.

By choosing not to see money as a major contributor to my state of being and lifestyle, I never did anything to steward money, grow it, make it work for me...

Since that realization, I've been working to grow money. I haven't worked a 9-5 since 2014 and I'm on a quest to build my personal empire. It's been a long windy road with successes and failures (which are really lessons in disguise) but I'm on the road! Sometimes it is really lonely. Life is hard. Business is hard too - particularly when it doesn't come natural to me.

But struggling to build wealth is different than struggling to find a better job. I have lots of ideas for affiliate ventures and I'm eager to learn. I'm excited to be here with you all so thanks for having me. I recently heard this phrase by Rita Davenport,

"Money isn't everything... but it ranks right up there with oxygen."

It made me laugh out loud. Even though I still believe that art and love matter a great deal, it's true that without money it's extremely difficult to survive... I'd love to know -

What influences shaped your ideas about money?

Please share your story with me...

ps. Don't laugh at the little gimpy kitty in the picture... It's just how he came out, it's not his fault! ;)

Money isn't everything. Money is important. It is what we use to trade our production for someone else's. Money is a tool. I like this quote, "Money is a great servant, but a lousy master."

Your mom is right about family being more important than money.

The trick is to be at peace with yourself whether you have money or not. That is not easy. We are told to be content. Yet, all of the inventions and advancements in technology, agriculture, medicine were brought about by people who were not content. People who wanted to make a change.

You are making a change. All the best to you.

Hi JLennon,
Thanks for the truths in your reply. I appreciate it.
I'm following you now so hopefully we can be in touch. [Well, actually, I'll follow you once I'm a premium member... LOL!]

Have a lovely day.
