A funny thing happened
Ok, so in order to be able to do things with my site that I was not able to do with WA as host, I created a new site with another host and did a 301 redirect at the old site.
Suddenly, overnight, my old site, which was on page 5 of Google, is now listed on page 2 under the address of the new site. So what is it that WA is doing that was holding my site back in Google?

301's permanent redirects pass most the "juice" from the old site to the new one. There are too many factors to know what caused the bump. If you used an older domain name (from registry records), that can sometimes give you a significant bump. Also some hosting providers behind the scenes automatically provide links to your site if you use their default setup options.
In any case, higher page ranking is nice :).
