Many of us have experienced the loss of loved ones, friends and acquaintances on our highways and have placed or viewed memorials in their memory.
When I pass a memorial, be it a cross or flowers, I wonder...
Who was that person or those people?
What happened?
Could it have been prevented?

What it must have been like for the family to receive a phone call or a visit from the police.
My wife and I were in bed when one of our our daughters awakened us and informed us that our youngest daughters boy friend was knocked down and was in hospital in serious condition. He passed away. He was 18 years old. He was at a party and had a few drinks so our daughter took his keys so he wouldn't attempt to drive home. She was talking to some girl friends and didn't know that he had left to hitch hike home..He was killed while crossing the highway. There is a restaurant located near the site where he was killed and is always a reminder to us of that horrible night.
I realize that there are many people who are against memorials being placed at accident locations where someone has lost their life. As well some states have a law prohibiting the placing of memorials. Some states permit memorials to be placed for a period of time, however it must be removed.
Personally, I feel that if memorials are permitted there should be guidelines for their placement and style. They should not impede or distract drivers.
To be continued...
Do the memorials cause people to change their driving habits?
