Reality Distortion Field

Steve Jobs (Apple) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon) were both famous for their ability to, let’s call it “bend reality.” Recall the movie Matrix.

Steve Jobs, as described by his senior managers had the habit of walking into a room with an idea, and no matter how unrealistic it sounded to everyone, had the capacity to create his own reality distortion field. When he decided to enter the MP3 audio player market, there were already a dozen MP3 players out there. Jobs, however, decided to come up with the BEST MP3 player ever made. Rumor had it that Apple was going to introduce a new Personal Digital Assistant (PDA for those not old enough to remember). The media was awash with anticipation of this new groundbreaking PDA. Instead, Apple introduced the iPod! What happened? For the first year after the introduction, Apple saw its stock drop 30% , then in the second year it dropped 18%. In the 3rd year, there was a rebound of unimaginable magnitude and Apple was on top of the worldwide MP3 market! IT TOOK THREE YEARS! Jobs obviously knew what he was doing, but he had to create his own reality distortion field in order to convince everyone this was the route to take.

When Amazon started marketing products on the internet, which was a new concept in the early stages of this now routine way of ordering products, it took a long time to get to the end of the purchasing process. Bezos was obsessed (remember that term) with the idea of making it as easy as possible for people to order products. He instructed his team to come back with ideas for a “one click” process. The development team worked very hard to come up with a simplified process. When they presented it to Bezos, it actually took twelve clicks. Bezos response - I want one click! Eventually, the team came up with the one click process which those of us who frequently order from Amazon, now take for granted.

What did these two people do differently? They both refused to accept the reality they were in (we can’t do this), and they created their own reality distortion field (we CAN do this) to make it happen. They took the Red Pill not the Blue Pill (refer to the movie Matrix). Can you do this also, even though you are not Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Morpheus or Neo? Why not?

I like the term "reality distortion field". I guess, most of us are not courageous enough to add the "distortion" to their imaginary field (me included)
