A Beautiful Mind

It is well established that the brain uses more energy than any other human organ, accounting for up to 20 percent of the body's energy consumption.

Wow, that is a lot of energy! What does the brain DO with all of that energy? Scientific studies continue conducting experiments to find out. Some researchers believe that a significant portion of the energy goes to housekeeping functions to keep the body working properly. But there is still MUCH that is yet to be discovered.

What do you do with your brain? At the suggestion of Sir John Hargrave in his book Mind Hacking, I started keeping tabs on what I was thinking about during the day. As often as it “came to my mind,” I would stop and ask myself, “what am I thinking about?” Every time I did this, I would award myself one point and write it down in my pocket notebook or on my smartphone.

Examples:

1 point – thinking about what chores I need to do this weekend

1 point - thinking about what work I need to do in Wealthy Affiliate

1 point - thinking about things I need to purchase at the store

Why award a point? Well, I could award myself a banana, apple or even a mini cinnamon roll …but by the end of the day I would weigh 400 lbs! Is there something I SHOULD be thinking about (thankful for being alive, how much I love my best friend and wife, how fortunate I am to have shelter, food, water) …or is there “stuff” I should NOT be thinking about (that idiot who pulled in front of me a few minutes ago in traffic, the fact that I have more to do than I can get done in a day, that I really need to do this or that)?

I was amazed at the end of the day yesterday how many USELESS and even harmful thoughts went thru my mind when I could “hack my brain” to stop those thoughts and substitute something positive or energizing.

Just an interesting experiment !

Have a great Sunday, November 13, 2016

Steve

With the potential to think 1000's of thoughts in a single day, it's a good thing you aren't rewarding yourself with single malts :)

Hmmmmmmmmm Now there is a thought John! Thanks for the suggestion.I figure 60 gallons of malt should do it !

You'll need to get more, Steve, by my calculations you'll need 175.7986 gallons.

Steve, this is what many spiritual teachings are about: Observe your mind and see what is working there without you even noticing it (normally). Useless to want to stop it, but good to know what is there....

Amen, terrific observation Heidi ! Thank you for taking the time!

No problem, this is the water I am constantly swimming in - abd hope not to drown, lol.

Very valuable information.

Thanks for taking the time Louisa ! Very much appreciated!

Very good read and great Information and they say we learn everyday !

I think learning new things is VERY exciting Paul...and I have heard (along with the fact that the moon is made of cheese) that learning new things may help delay the onset of Alzheimer's.

Ate what???

Alex wha

Atz who???

AlZ ah yes ?????

This is a terrific string Fred, I mean Bill, or Hank...no wait....it is a terrific string PAUL !

Thanks for the interesting read, Steve. That is an intriguing experiment you've been doing. It looks like a great way to eliminate a lot of negative thinking. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Thanks and you too Mike! We are waiting for the "fish count" at the end of the day ! Maybe even a picture?

I hate to admit it, Steve, but the fish have won by TKO.
My friend's boat motor won't cooperate today, so this trip
has been cut short. Time to head home. Have a great day,
my friend!

Steve, what interesting topics you come up with.
Thank you for sharing

Thanks Linda. I have a very "strange" mind! Wait a minute, I need to award myself a point!

Have a great Sunday my friend!

Lol
You too!

But what if, what you are thinking about & or talking about is not relevant to the other person??? It still takes the same energy, maybe even more, to get to the same point!

Excellent point Linda and something to "think" about when we are talking with others.

Which may be the reason I talk to myself a lot :-)

By talking to oneself one gets expert advice & cannot dispute where it comes from :)

LOL - Point taken. Oh, BTW, award yourself a point Linda !

Interesting concept, Steve, and how right you are, about how little we know about it!

There's a fascinating branch of study that deals with cross-over body excercises, and their effect on brain function and performance.

I have a cousin who is actually teaching a discipline of that.
The reports from her students are very encouraging!

Thanks, Therese - When you have the time I would love to hear about the reports from your cousin's students!

Happy Sunday!

Ok, will do.

One thing I can tell you right now:

The excercises improve all aspects of motorics and coordination.

I'll check for more on this....

You have a great Sunday too!

Thanks VERY much! So if it improves coordination, perhaps I will fall off of my exercise ball less frequently !

You should see me....

I don't even have one to fall off of☺☺☺

LOL - Then you are safe from this potential pitfall :-)

A great post and read, Steve.
Many thanks, well done.
Cheers, Tosh :)

Good to talk to you Tosh and thank you!

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Steve
