Words Paint Pictures!
Whenever we speak to others face-to-face, we express our thoughts with words, vocal tone/inflection, and body language/gestures. But when we WRITE, we are ONLY using words.
I live near a 7Eleven convenience store. Consider the picture each sentence paints as I seek to go get a "slurpee".
I WALKED to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I JOGGED to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I RAN to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I SPRINTED to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I BIKED to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I DROVE to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
I PERAMBULATED to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. (Pause)
Each sentence expresses the same idea: going to the 7Eleven to get a slurpee. However, the manner of going, energy expended, and condition in which I arrive are DIFFERENT depending on the change of only ONE word. And if a person doesn't know the meaning of "perambulate", have I really communicated with him?
So carefully consider your choice of words when you want to get your message across IN WRITING.
To your success,
Steve
