Dynamic Posture

Like most people, my shoulders have a tendency to roll forward, entrained that way by my dominantly forward focus. It happens as I shift my awareness forward of my center of gravity. As I reach forward to accomplish my tasks, my body compensates for the shift in my awareness with a pattern of tension that cantilevers the load of my torso, arms and whatever I'm working with back through my center of gravity.

This pattern of tension is comprised of certain points where the load bearing changes direction slightly. These points are where pain occurs when you never release the load (habitual posture).

I figured this out while I was stretching to relieve a new pain down the back of my arm, through my triceps and the outer forearm to the pinkie. I realized that rolling my shoulders back and down (to oppose the habitual posture) was impacting my ulnar nerve.

Then I realized back and down is not the true opposite direction to my posture. I had only been considering the extremes of mobility (and training myself away from raising my shoulders). Actually, the issue is off-center or on-center. The same issue as my attention moving off-center of my center of gravity.

The further impact of pinning my shoulders back and down compresses the upper torso, decreasing nerve impulses, blood and lymph flow. I think I may have just unraveled the source of my thoracic outlet syndrome (same symptoms as carpal tunnel).

I moved my attention back to my center. This realization alone decreased my pain 50% immediately.

I began feeling for a sensation of my shoulders floating freely. The rest of my pain melted away.
