Monetising your website - my observations

Hi WA people,

My website is 4 months old and so far things are moving at a slow pace. I'm fine with the development of my website and taking the necessary steps to market it. I'm a firm believer in the proverb "slow and steady wins the race" in fact my characteristics are some what embodied around that phase.

Anyway, enough of the rambling. My goal for 2014 is to gain as much organic traffic as possible, keep the bounce rate low and of course continue with frequent content submission. I'm very passionate about my niche and want to sincerely empower individuals about how to lead a healthier lifestyle, with that being said, in terms of monetising my website........well.....let's just say I'm taking baby steps. I recently added google adsense to my site as a test pilot rather than to accrue a passive income.

As of lately I'm grow frustrated with posts pertaining to people with newly developed website complaining about a lack of sales. Perhaps I'm the one who needs to move with haste?

Just wondering, am I the only person who is focused on gaining traffic/content building for the first year? I'm not trying to discourage people from adding affiliate links etc.. to their website, that's an autonomous decision for you to make. However, I do sometimes wonder if people are more focused on securing a sale instead of content building, gaining traffic and establishing a rapport with the wider audience?

Btw This post isn't intended to specifically target anyone on WA. I'm simply conveying some general observations.

Your thoughts please??

It is not just you I am now at the 5mth mark and I am focusing on traffic and good content, when that is right the sales will come, it is better to take it slow and get it right, after all the fastest does not always win the race ,, best of luck

Hi, I am building up my content slowly - I haven't even thought about monetising yet as I would probably be turned down for any affiliate links at the moment anyway. But that said, it is up to the individual, as we all move at a different pace and we all have different goals. Cheers, Paul :)

Keep for convicts girl it will work

I am with you.. slow and steady is the key. I am sure there are some who will hit the fast track, but they are rare. I have been at this for about 4 months now myself and am happy to get the organic going. They are truly the ones that count. It will happen, it just takes time.

Individual Choice!

Yes, it IS up to each individual. People are doing this for different reasons. While most people DO want to make money, it is not their top priority OR they don't feel comfortable monetizing until they have a lot of content. You could come up with a lot of reasons so do what YOU feel comfortable doing. This isn't a race. ~Debbi

Wow, that's great news Corey and very inspiring too. I suppose in the long run it is down to the individual.

Interesting points. :)

Thanks

Most welcome. :)

Once you get your site on page one you still need to be adding content in order to hold that ranking. So as I see it content is going get you there and content is going keep you there. Keep writing every one you will be there.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

You've got the right idea in my opinion. Mark Zuckerberg didn't monetise Facebook for years, after its initial development, for this very reason.

Different horses for different courses of course, lol.

You are doing nothing wrong, but neither is anyone else who might be monetising sooner.

It all depends on what the individual is trying to achieve.

I personally don't even launch until my site is full of content and ready to roar. Monetised or not.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input Corey,

I don't believe it's a case of right or wrong, but rather people's motive and expectations. What concerns me is people who have this tunnel vision of launching a website and expecting to gain a large sum of money in a short amount of time. Entrepreneurship isn't an overnight success.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Each to their own. Some people are very successful (make money) right from the get go. My first website only made $60 in its first month, but then I made $1000 in the second, and $2000 in the third. Shortly after that I quit my job and things only improved from that point forward. I would have regretted not monetising right out of the gate, especially if I hadn't, and had to look back in hindsight.

Like I said, different horses for different courses. It comes entirely down to the individual and the type of 'niche' etc.
