Most people don’t think about me much.
I’m small. I’m subtle. I’m that hyperlink you slip into your blog post with a hopeful sigh and a gentle nudge toward conversion.

But let me tell you—I’ve seen some things.

Meet Your Link

You pasted me lovingly into a paragraph. Gave me a shortener, maybe even a tracking ID. I was feeling good, confident, even.

“This is it,” I thought. “Today’s the day I shine.”

I sat nestled between helpful tips and bullet points, right after a beautiful call-to-action. I was ready. I was optimized.
And then? The journey began.

The Journey Begins

At 6:32 a.m., I got my first click.

It came from someone on mobile with 37 other tabs open and a thumb quicker than reason. They clicked me…
...and then they got distracted by a cat video.

I waited.

At 9:14 a.m., someone else hovered their mouse over me for a full three seconds. That’s an eternity in link years.
They considered. They almost clicked.
Then they remembered they were late for work.

By 1:00 p.m., I was finally clicked again—this time by a serious shopper! They added the product to their cart…
…and then decided to “sleep on it.”

By 3:42 p.m., disaster struck: Ad blocker.
I got blocked faster than a cold sales DM on LinkedIn.

By 4:08 p.m., someone rage-clicked me three times in a row during a slow page load. I felt used. Confused. Slightly flattered.

At 5:12 p.m., I watched a visitor highlight me, copy me, and paste me into a browser tab… only to close it seconds later. That one hurt.

At 6:00 p.m., I was clicked again by someone using incognito mode with cookies disabled. I screamed silently into the void.
No tracking. No credit. No love.

But just when I was about to give up hope, at 10:16 p.m.—
conversion. Sweet, glorious, trackable conversion.
A visitor clicked me, bought something, and you got a commission.

I exhaled. My job was done.

The Lessons Hidden in Humor

We affiliate links may be small, but we carry a lot of responsibility.
And honestly? We could use a little help.

Here’s what I (and your future commissions) wish more affiliates would do:

• Give us context. Don’t just drop us randomly—make us feel at home in helpful, relevant content.
• Test us. A broken link is a lonely link.
• Track us. UTM parameters, shorteners, dashboards—whatever you’ve got. We like attention.
• Place us wisely. Above the fold, under a CTA, or paired with a strong recommendation—we thrive when positioned with intention.
• Check on us. Algorithms change. Product pages break. Don’t let us rot in an old blog post.
• Remember us. Just because we’re digital doesn’t mean we don’t long for a little purpose. (Okay, maybe that’s dramatic. But still—don’t ghost your links.)

Affiliate marketing isn’t just about what you promote—it’s about how and where you place us. Strategy matters, even for little links like me.
