My First AI Video Attempt: Zappy’s Debut (Sort Of!)
☕️ Here’s my very first experiment using Canva’s new Veo 3 AI video generator. I set out to create a truly cartoonish, animated version of my sidekick Zappy, aiming for a fun, feminine, and approachable vibe. The result? Let’s just say Zappy showed up looking a bit more realistic than I expected.
Creating a brand mascot with AI video is definitely a work in progress. I was hoping for more of that playful, cartoon-style character, but the technology has its quirks and surprises. Still, I wanted to share this attempt with you all as part of my learning curve. If you’ve played around with Canva’s AI video tools or have any tips for getting a more “cartoon” look, I’d love to hear your advice.
P.S. I think Zappy was channeling her “realism mode” for this one. Next round: more coffee, more cartoon!
Stay tuned! Zappy’s best look is yet to come!

I have not played with any AI video creations but it is at the top of my list! Will be sure to post when I do!
That’s awesome, John! You’ll have so much fun experimenting when you dive in.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with, be sure to tag me when you share your first AI video!
The new frontier. Over the weekend I created 2 AI videos. The first got 1500 views. The second, not so many. But keep swinging for the fences.
MrDon
Wow, MrDon! That’s impressive, 1,500 views is a fantastic start. AI video really does feel like the new frontier for creators.
I agree, it’s all about staying in the game and learning with each swing. Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Canva’s video tools are getting better all the time, congrats on making your own video too!
If you have any prompt tips or want to swap ideas, let’s connect. Always fun to see what everyone’s creating.
I treat my prompts all the same like i'm talking to a human... seems to work. so far....
That’s a great approach, Jeremy! I’m starting to realize that, too, the more natural and human I make my prompts, the better the results seem to be. Thanks for the tip! It definitely helps keep things creative (and less robotic).
Let’s keep sharing what works!
Wow that's exciting, I have to check it out, Is Veo 3 AI video generator free with Canva pro?
I have that..
Larry
Great question, Larry! Veo 3 is included with Canva Pro, so you can try out the AI video generator at no extra cost.
Just keep in mind, Canva Pro gives you 5 Veo 3 video credits per month. It’s plenty to experiment with, but you’ll want to plan your projects a bit.
If you need any tips to get started, let me know!
That’s pretty cool Sonia. Are you going to use this format for making YouTube videos?
Need to upgrade to Pro if I want to use this feature.
Thanks, Steve! I’m not sure yet if I’ll use this format for YouTube—right now, I’m still practicing and trying to get better at writing prompts for Canva. There’s definitely a learning curve, and since you only get five videos a month on Pro, you really have to make each one count! I might experiment more before taking it to YouTube, but I’ll definitely share what I learn along the way.
Thank you for sharing as I look forward to seeing what you learn. So far, I’ve been trying out their AI image creator. It takes lots of prompting for sure to get anything just the way I want but I’m enjoying it.
Did you use a canva recorded sound or did you use an AI voice generator on canva? I ask because I'm now wondering if canva has an AI voice where you can just type it out. Your experiment looks great 🙂
Thank you! Yes, the voice in the video was generated by Veo 3 inside Canva. I just typed my script—like this:
“Stuck on your site? Take a sip, breathe, and just keep creating. You’re not alone!”
and Canva created the AI voiceover automatically.
Just a heads-up, when you use this feature, Canva also adds automatic captions to the video, but sometimes the captions have misspellings or aren’t quite accurate. You may need to delete or fix those before sharing your video.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you want to give it a try or if you have more questions.
There are so many AI options and it asks me for credits, so I can't try them out. I'm looking for a voice over of whatever I type for a faceless channel. I'm trying a bit of everything like an AI video for parts of that faceless channel. But these credit requirements get in my way. How do I even get them? I have the canva pro
Thanks for sharing, Monse! I totally get how all these AI tools and credit systems can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to test different options. With Canva Pro, you get five AI video credits a month for their Veo 3 and voiceover features. Once those are used up, you have to wait for them to refresh the next month—there’s no option for extra credits at the moment.
For voiceover, ElevenLabs is an excellent choice, especially if you want to use your own voice or need more flexibility. Another tool you might want to check out is HeyGen (formerly Movio). HeyGen lets you create videos with AI avatars, just type in your script, pick an avatar style (realistic or cartoonish), and the platform generates a video with an automatic voiceover. It’s a favorite for faceless channels, explainer videos, and social media clips, though the free version is pretty limited.
If you want help comparing these tools or tips for getting the most out of your Canva credits, just let me know! There are so many options out there and it’s definitely a learning curve for all of us. I’m still experimenting with different platforms myself, so happy to swap ideas anytime.

Well done I say! I have a little bit of experience with Canva, I created a children's book series using Co-pilot along with Canva. I have a character in the image of me when I was 4 and 5 years old. Your character could easily fit into my book LOL. I know what it takes to produce your sidekick Zappy, it's a lot of fun and challenging. Great work Sonia. Thank you for sharing. And keep up with Zappy. She's cool! :)
Thank you, Brenda! Wow, your children’s book project sounds amazing, and I love that you created a character inspired by your childhood self—that’s so special. Producing Zappy has definitely been both a fun and challenging process.
If Zappy ever needs a cameo in a book series, I know where to send her! Thanks for the encouragement and for sharing your experience.
