Ask for Niche Advice and Connections

Hi WA community,

I am asking for your advice on creating my first website around my first niche of choice. I typically have a difficult time picking a narrow or super specific niche as I want to do all of the things and help all of the people :P.

I have learned from marketing advice that actually chosing a specific niche is actually a lot more effective as if you chose a topic too broad, you aren't speaking to anyone. I mean look at the training video, superbowl snack helmets; that's very specific!

My target niche is referred to as Aging in Place, which means people typically 55 and older who want to maintain or even improve their independence and want to age living in their own homes, not a nursing home or what have you. This is my specialty as an Occupational Therapy Assistant working in home healthcare!

For my first site, I want to focus on my specific area of expertise. I was already thinking of creating a website for my patients and family members that I thought would also be useful for consumers too. My specific focus is Senior Home Safety which includes items such as grab bars, shower chairs, medical alert devices, and much more!

Ask #1: Would it be make more sense to get very specific with it or leave it open and more general as I typically gravitate to that? How specific should I get, if at all?

A few ideas and examples:

A) Senior Home Safety that includes all of the different types of equipment and tips, reviews, ect.
B) Senior Self-Care that focuses on equipment to increase safety and independence through compensation as the individual has limited shoulder mobility for example; what we call in the medical field ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) which includes bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming/hygiene, eating and I can focus on just those areas
C) Or Micro Niches like only shower chairs or something like that? Or start general and create subcategories as I go?

I would like to go more general as I have a vast knowledge on these subjects and have not found many websites other than home health agency websites that provide this information. My experience is that my patients and family members actually rarely even look at the home health agency websites which provide more vague information than what I will.

Ask #2: (I'm excited in anticipation of having help from the view of the consumer since I'm all medical minded) What domain name do you like best or would you reach out to for help with your parents or grandparents?

A) seniorselfcare.com

B) seniorhomesafetysetup.com

C) homesafetyforseniors.com

D) seniorsforindependence.com

E) healthylivingforseniors.com

or the domain I already own but feel is too vague/easy to forget unless you are also someone working in the Aging in Place space which is included below...

F) healthylivinginplace.com

I really like A) but am not sure if it would cost an arm and a leg to purchase it. I have already sort of "branded" myself on social media as Sonia Self-Care within my mindfulness community on Instagram and am starting to brand myself as Coach Sonia Self-Care on Facebook for my health coaching so it would be cool if I could eventually connect these spheres with Self-Care.

Heads Up: I have not looked at home much A-E domain name options will cost to purchase yet! If I remember right, ones with 3 words or less are typically really pricey.

Drop a comment to below to help me answer my Asks. Also, please feel free to provide a simple Ask of me so I can pay it forward.

Also...please CONNECT me with any others that are working within this same niche as I would find it beneficial to connect and help each other really build up this industry more. I don't view them as competitors but as allies in expanding the education and knowledge to help improve the lives of the aging population.

Again: EXTREME gratitude to the already HUGE amount of interaction and support I've gotten in the very little time I have been a part of WA.

P.P.S. Do photos always take a long time to load? Does it help to switch any settings on my browser? I typically use Google Chrome.

What a great list of ideas. I do like your first website name, senior self care. As for narrowing down niches, I am relative new and don't feel I should comment. I do like what Stanley has to say below.
You will do awesome, whatever plan you come up with.
    Keep us posted.

Wow, that is a lot of questions. Let me try...

    1. Great niche - I call it “silver generation”

    2. Narrowing the niche need more research

    3. I agree with A for domain name too for best fit. “Healthy living” is different niche and may miss the target. But don’t worry too much as you will be using keywords.

    4. Others in same niche, they know who they are and will probably contact you

    5. Images will take time to load but there is an image optimized plug-in to help with that.

    Cheers,
    Stanley

    Thanks for the insight!
