The report by the University of Pretoria earlier this sent shockwaves through the country when it revealed that pupils in grade 4 have difficulty with reading.

Against this backdrop, many children in South Africa come from households. Parent’s literacy levels are low and this leaves them struggling to cope with school work or homework.

In response to this social challenge, Ray Nxumalo, former journalist and social activits founded Rough Diamonds, an NGO which seeks to address educational challenges youth in Meadowlands, Soweto face.

The organisation conducts afterschool classes and helps local children of all grades with homework thus improving their chances of success. The NGO was founded in 2015. Though when founded it was responding to challenges in the educational system, the organisation also runs various campaigns targeting youth issues such as drug abuse awareness campaigns, teen pregnancy awareness, HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns etc. Ray Nxumalo is our hero. The important initiative, it can help to lift up the educational level and interest in studies.
