My top 5 tips for writing website content.
Writing for your website, it’s not rocket science, is it? No, but then neither is brain surgery ;-)
I joke, because although it’s not difficult, sometimes, it’s not exactly easy. Things get in the way. Things like life and work to name but two.
With that said, here are my top 5 tips for writing website content.
One: Get on with it.
Oh, har, har, just get on with it. That’s easy for you to say. Well, yes, it is, but it’s also incredibly easy to do too. What do writers do? They write. What do website content writers do…
Honestly, just getting something down on paper will get those creative juices flowing and pretty soon you’ll have something worthy of the name of ‘website content.’
Two: Don’t be afraid to magpie.
Wait, what? Magpie? My goodness man, what are you twittering on about? Well, magpies like to borrow shiny things. As a teacher, I use the idea of magpie-ing to help myself to other people’s ideas and repurpose them or reimagine them in my own way. It’s not stealing, it’s taking the kernel of a good idea and developing it in your own way, in your own direction.
I will often take someone else’s post and use the skeleton of it to write my own. I remove all of their words and I usually change the order of their headings. I add my own and so on. I make it mine, give it my own direction. I add in bits of research to make my own points.
Three: Use the tools.
Keyword research is essential. It’s mentioned in the training over and over. Look for key word phrases that deliver visitors with low competition (QSR < 100). It’s all there in Jaaxy. If you haven’t got it, get it.
Just a note of caution, though. Do remember to make sure that the key word phrase you use flows properly. Search engines may love it, but if it sounds contrived to the reader, put them off likely it will.
Four: Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback.
Yep, the dreaded feedback. It’s essential so that you don’t feel like you are shouting into the void. You are targeting real people in the real world, so get some feedback from them.
WA is a great place, a safe place, to get positive, constructive feedback. Then act on it. Don’t ask for someone’s opinion and then totally ignore it.
Of course, you might think you know better. Crikey (Brit-slang), I am that man, but there will always be an element in feedback that will help you improve.
Seeing something with another’s eyes. Priceless.
Five: Keep it fresh.
This links back to my first tip. Keep at it. Fresh content keeps your website fresh. It keeps our friends at Google (other search engines are available) happy.
If they’re happy, your visitors will be happy, and you’ll be happy.
That's it. What do you think?
I hope that you have enjoyed reading this. If you want to take issue, or to add anything, please do. As I say, feedback is key.
