Beautiful Prague
So, My wife and I have just returned from a weekend in Prague. This was my treat to her on the occasion of her (number ending with zero)th birthday.
We flew from Manchester at Friday lunchtime, arriving in the late afternoon after a 90-minute flight and an hour's adjustment to CET. Navigation from Vaclav Havel airport to central Prague was a breeze at a cost of 40 Czech crowns (or koruna) each. This converted to about 1.30 GBP or 1.60 Euros or 1.70 USD.
It truly is a most beautiful city. And it's so compact. On Saturday, within half an hour of walking, we had crossed the Charles Bridge and located the Castle. Charles Bridge is for pedestrians only and dates from the fourteenth century. Until 1841 it was the only means of crossing the River Vlatava.
The castle precinct, in particular St Vitus Cathedral, was heaving due to it being a National Holiday - the Day of Czech Statehood. We eventually went into the cathedral and were rewarded with our chance to see the most beautiful stonework and stained glass windows.
The following day we visited the Jewish Quarter. We took our time to visit all of the synagogues. The most impressive, architecturally was the Spanish Synagogue. The most poignant was the Pinkas Synagogue with the names of the victims of the Holocaust victims of Bohemia and Moravia.
And sadly, that was it. On Monday we had an afternoon flight back to the UK. Before that, we took the opportunity to walk along Wenceslas Square, stopping off for coffee before we headed back to the airport - another 40 Kč each well spent.
