International Pay it Forward Day

As a huge fan of the Pay it Forward philosophy, I am helping to promote International Pay It Forward Day within my local region. Yet as Wealthy Affiliate is s Pay it Forward Community, I thought I'd share this with you guys too.

“Pay It Forward” is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor. The concept is very old, but the phrase was first coined by Lily Hardy Hammond in her 1916 book In the Garden of Delight.

Although the phrase “Pay It Forward” appeared from time to time over the decades, it was popularized in Catherine Ryan Hyde’s 1999 novel of the same name, which was adapted into the 2001 motion picture, starring Helen Hunt, Kevin Spacey and Haley Joel Osment. The premise of story is about a 12 year old boy who did three good deeds for others in need. All he asked in return, was for them to pass on the good deed to three other people, and keep the cycle going.

Within days of the movie premiering the world was swept by dozens of Pay It Forward campaigns.“Pay It Forward Day” was born in Australia on 24th April 2007 and, in 2013, more than 500,000 people in 65 countries around the world participated on the day.

On Pay It Forward Day, people are asked to do one good deed for three others. When recipients ask how they can re-pay the favor, which can be big or small, they'll be instructed to pay it forward to three more people. With each good deed, the cycle of generosity and kindness will ripple across the world, making us all better people.

Pay It Forward Day is about all people, from all walks of life, giving to someone else, and making a positive difference.

So why Pay it Forward?

  • To encourage all of us to embrace the incredible power of giving.
  • To show each other that we care and that there is love, hope and magic all around us.
  • To know that we may be only one person in this world, but to one person, at one time, we are the world.

So Why Just Make it One Day?

Let’s Pay it Forward every day. Together we can change the world – one good deed at a time!

Mother Teresa once said: “I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there.”

Going against the flow is pointless, so wouldn’t it be better to have a Pay-it-Forward campaign than an Anti-Bullying campaign?? Let’s face it, when we’re told NOT to do something, don’t we want to DO IT MORE??

I love it! Very inspirational! I've always believed in "DO unto others as you would have them do unto you" and the pay it forward daily is a great way to accomplish that. When I give to others I never ask for anything in return...I shall start requesting that they pay it forward to 3 others as you mention...thanks for the insight!!

Thanks for the encouraging comment Jenny :)

As always, very thoughtful and inspirational. Thanks, Sibylle!

Thank YOU Sadie for stopping by and reading :))

Paying it forward is a great way to live life.

It certainly is Kary. I've been doing so for as long as I can remember and absolutely love watching the responses of making that little difference to someone's life.

Hi Sibylle, I love your writing and more so the Pay It Forward philosophy. I thought I understood it enough to write a blog on the subject recently but now I know I have more to learn from you. I will remember to take action to support the PIF spirit everyday. Thank you!

Thank you Fred, on both fronts :))

I actually saw the movie "pay it forward." I agree this is a wonderful way to encourage and uplift our members. Well done sibylle. Thank you.

Me too Marion... back in 2001. That's when I fell in love with the whole concept, realising that's how I live my life anyway.

Our church is doing its second Alaska Fest. We purchase and donate clothing, shoes, big screen TVs, laptops, game boxes, household items, groceries, vehicles, etc., invite the non-churched, and give it all away to them. I think that's a type of paying it forward. Its putting our lip professions into action--G-d's love at work through giving to the needy.

What your church is doing is good, because that's what churches do. Pay it Forward is when an individual does something for someone else, without expecting anything in return.

showing my liking with a like and I promise to do this at least 3 times today, in whatever way I can, Andy

Good on you Andy!!

pay it forward, I mean 3 x a day, just liking would not be very ambitious!

That's even better Andy :)
