How committed are you?

I've noticed a number of comments by newbies saying they're not going to buy WA's premium membership yet because they're only dipping their toe in the water and waiting to make some money first. It reminds me of one of my many adventures in life...

I'd been a public servant for the NSW Police Department for 8 1/2 years when I resigned, wanting to explore a completely different life in hospitality. Everyone around me kept saying "Sib, don't resign, just take leave without pay so you can come back if you don't succeed."

Good point!! However, I saw that as having a back-up plan and I believe back-up plans mean we actually plan to fail or, at best, are not fully committed to success.

So I resigned, did a cocktail bar course and moved to Far North Queensland. Sure, I didn't make nearly as much money as I was used to and life wasn't "easy". But hey, I had lots of fun!! I know that if I'd only taken leave without pay, I would have gone back to my well paying job with the NSW Police Dept. While that might have been the safest option, I have no doubt whatsoever that it would not have been the best option. Certainly not for my personal growth.

Stepping out of our comfort zone is the only time we're ever going to grow.

Goodness know I've stepped out of my comfort zone plenty of times. I've failed plenty of times too, yet I don't see any of them as failures. Each and every "failure" has provided so many amazing adventures and for that I can only be grateful.

Personally, I never did the siterubix thing. I'm certainly not saying don't do it at all, I just want to challenge your level of commitment.

I'll leave you with this quote by William Murray, which has helped me truck loads over the past couple of decades...

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans. It is this: The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves you. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man or woman could have dreamed would have come his/her way.” - William Murray

In China they have a saying that says "bury the axes and sink the boats". It's a story about soldiers going to war and leaving themselves no way back and no way to make camp. The only way to survive was to win the war by moving forward.

Sounds a lot like William Murray's quote here...at least the beginning part :)
