I need to know how is the best way to have a friend start at WA, and I get credit for it, or is that even possible, since I'm so early in the program (a newbie)?
If you have a friend who's interested in what you're learning, I go with the much more direct approach. Just tell the friend you've found a training community that teaches you how to build a website online that makes money. Explain why that's been something that's intrigued you in the past. Tell her the training platform is free to test drive to see if it's something she'd like to learn. The $ icon up top has your affiliate links. You can click on any of them yourself to see exactly where they take you. When you send whichever one you choose to your friend, they'll be brought here and prompted to create their free starter account just like you did.
It is never too early to refer a friend. There is no magic bullet. I can give you a few suggested approaches.
1st Approach
Since you are a newbie you could think of this like a challenge. Ask your friend would she accept a challenge to see who could earn their first check through Affiliate Marketing. Say that you just found out about how you could get companies like Amazon, Target and Walmart to pay you. Would she like to know more?
Then send her to the Join For Free affiliate link of yours. Just in case you don't know where that is, click on the $ sign on the top right. You will find it there.
2nd Approach
Skip the challenge part and go straight to the question about getting paid by the big companies. Your friend may ask does it cost anything. Your answer should be it doesn't. All she needs is a valid Email address to register for this fantastic course that teaches you to do this. But don't go into big explanations. Just give her your WA affiliate URL to check it out for herself.
3rd Approach
Ask your friend that if she found out about something amazing would she share that with you? The chances are she would say YES. Immediately tell her that you have found out something exciting and being friends you want to tell her what it is. If she says yes, send her to your URL to check it out. Just add it is about building a website that will make you money while you sleep!
Do any of these approaches sound like something you could do?

on my WA page my background is black, how do I change it back?
Sounds like you're talking about your WordPress dashboard. Yeah the menus there are on a dark background. Nothing to worry about at all.
