Google Allows Direct Publish to Search Results

I came across this article stating that Google is allowing a post tool for Presidential candidates and soon for some small business owners. They can post images and text and the results will appear above the search results. At this time the tool is free. This is another way that businesses can attract customers. It is not linked to Google+ which they are moving away from. I never got that social media figured out to use effectively. I wonder If I should waste anymore time? I also wonder how this new post tool will impact visibility and ranking.
