Most affiliate programs have a free entry level and also have a "backend" that takes a paid subscription. It's called forced continuity! For example you may get a cell phone at some companies for little or no money but you have to pay the monthly phone bill.
This is one of the tools of the rich like Oprah and her magazine, or HBO and their free weekend. Even the fast food industry asks: "do you want fries with that?"
Same with affiliate programs. The best ones allow you to utilize a form of forced continuity when you join at the higher levels then you get a "cut" of the subscription money. Sometimes you have to "pay to play" and never be afraid to invest in yourself even if it's your last dollar!
I think I'll write a blog about the concept of forced continuity to explain it in a little more detail.
Hope that helped.
