Welcome to the USA. I live in Midwest also. But I have visited Bay Area and I don't think you will feel alone very long. It is a very friendly city if you look around carefully. Try churches, schools, gyms for a start. Even parks are a good place to try and meet people. There are coffee houses all over. Libraries are sometime quiet places to meet people. Use your imagination. Go to local welcoming centers and find what is available. Best of luck. You should have much to blog about.
