How to Create a Category Page Manually With Images (After Hours of Searching!)

When building a website with WordPress, organizing content properly is extremely important. One of the best ways to improve your site's design and navigation is by creating a category list with images.

Instead of showing plain text categories, you can display beautiful category cards with images that guide visitors to explore your content.

I spent hours searching the internet, installing different plugins, and testing multiple methods.

Finally, after experimenting, I found a simple way to create a category page manually and display images for each category. If you’re struggling like I was, this guide will help you do it quickly.

Step 1: Create Your Categories

First, you need to create the categories you want to display.

  1. Go to your WordPress Dashboard
  2. Click Posts
  3. Select Categories
  4. Add your categories

Step 2: Create a New Page for Your Category Section

Now create a page where the category images will appear.

  1. Go to Pages
  2. Click Add New
  3. Title it something like:

Browse Categories
or
Shop by Category

This will become a visual navigation section for your visitors.

Step 3: Add a Column Layout

To display categories neatly:

  1. Click the + button
  2. Select Columns
  3. Choose 3 columns or 4 columns

This creates a grid layout where each column will represent a category.

Step 4: Insert Category Images

Inside each column:

  1. Click +
  2. Add an Image block
  3. Upload a relevant image

Step 5: Add the Category Title

Under the image:

  1. Add a Heading block or button block
  2. Write the category name

Step 6: Link the Image to the Category Page

Now connect the image to the category page.

  1. Click the image or heading or button
  2. Click the link icon
  3. Paste your category URL

Final Thoughts

You don't need complicated tools or plugins to make your website look great. By manually creating a category list with images in WordPress, you can design a clean and attractive browsing experience for your readers.

With just a few simple steps, your website will look more organized, modern, and engaging.

How do you currently organize categories on your website — text only or with images?

Do you think category images make a website easier to explore? Why or why not
