Amazon Just Changed the Rules (2026): What WA Members Should Do Next

If you’re using Amazon affiliate links in your blog posts (like many of us do), there’s a new update you really need to understand.

InfogaphicAmazonPolicyAmazon has made some changes to their Associates Operating Agreement, and while they may sound a little technical at first… they actually have some very real effects on how we earn commissions.

Don’t worry—I’m going to break this down in plain English and show you what it means for your blog.

Let’s take a look

What Changed (And Why You Should Care)

Amazon updated a few key areas:

  • When commissions qualify (new time limits)
  • How paid traffic is handled (this is a big one)
  • What counts as valid affiliate content
  • How commissions are calculated on related products

Let’s go through each one the easy way.

1. The New 180-Day Rule

Amazon now says that for a sale to count:

The product must be shipped, downloaded, or streamed AND paid for within 180 days

What this means for you:

  • If someone clicks your link but waits too long → no commission
  • If they cancel or delay payment → no commission

Real-life example:

Someone clicks your tea kettle link… puts it in their cart… and forgets about it for 6 months.

Before? Maybe you still got lucky.
Now? That sale likely won’t count.

2. Paid Ads Just Got Risky

This is probably the most important change.

Amazon now says purchases can be disqualified if the customer came from:

  • Boosted Facebook posts
  • Pinterest ads
  • Google ads
  • Any paid promotion linking to Amazon

Even if you didn’t use Amazon brand keywords

What this means:

Running paid traffic directly to Amazon links is now much riskier

Safer approach:

Instead of:
👉 Ad → Amazon

Do this:
👉 Ad → Your blog post → Amazon

Even then, be cautious and always double-check Amazon’s wording.

3. Less “Extra” Commission from Related Purchases

Ready to put this into action?

Start your free journey today — no credit card required.

Before:
You could earn from a wider range of items in the same category.

Now:
👉 Commissions are more focused on:

  • The exact product, or
  • Very closely related variants

What this means:

Less “bonus” commission from random add-on purchases.

So your link choice matters more than ever.

✍4. “Original Content” Now Has a Clear Definition

Amazon is now saying your content must include:

✔️ Commentary
✔️ Analysis
✔️ Transformation

In other words…

Just listing products is NOT enough anymore.

☕ What Works Better Now

Instead of this:

“Here are 10 tea mugs on Amazon.”

Do this:

  • “Best Tea Mugs for Cozy Evenings (and Which One I Use)”
  • “5 Tea Kettles for Seniors – Easy, Safe & Reliable”
  • “My Favorite Tea Tools After 10 Years of Daily Use”

Add things like:

  • Personal opinions
  • Comparisons
  • Pros & cons
  • Who the product is best for
  • Real-life use

That’s what Amazon wants now.

What I’m Doing Moving Forward

Here’s how I’m adjusting my own blogs:

  • Writing more helpful, experience-based posts
  • Focusing on specific recommendations
  • Avoiding direct paid ads to Amazon links
  • Making each post feel like I’m helping a friend choose

Because honestly…

That’s what converts best anyway.

Why This Is Actually Good News

I know changes like this can feel frustrating.

But here’s the upside:

It rewards bloggers who actually help people. (and this fits with the Wealthy Affiliate ideology)

If you:

  • Write clearly
  • Share real insights
  • Build trust

You’re already ahead.

📌 Final Thoughts

Amazon didn’t end affiliate marketing…

They just raised the bar a little and that’s not a bad thing. Because helpful content always wins in the long run.

Let’s Talk

Are you using Amazon links in your blog?

Have you ever tried paid ads—or are you sticking with organic traffic? (for myself I've been sticking with organic traffic)

I’d love to hear what you’re doing 👇
