Back in 2006 I was a young man without a job and a plan. Living at home with a mother who was never there, I survived on about $600 a month and drove an 84 Cadillac Brougham (straight gas hog). By chance I stumbled across Mary Gersten's online company called "Global Cash Flow Network" (GCFN). For something around $100 you get a starter kit with supposedly everything you need to know about becoming a Certified Media Placement Specialist (CMPS).
Now first off what the hek is a CMPS? Well let me tell you it's been 8 years and I have yet to find a definition for the term. I've come to the conclusion that it's basically just a fancy word for Affiliate Marketer. At the time I was an absolute brain dead beginner, I had no idea how the internet worked or what Affiliate Marketing even was. I just thought that having your own website was pretty cool and a must if you are interested in pursuing a home based internet business.
Once you've paid your fee and receive your starter kit, it basically looks like a a big binder with a bunch of reading material that was typed from an old typewriter. First thing they want you to do is call the office number to set up your website. In my mind i'm thinking okay this is kinda cool, I speak to a gentleman who says he's a media specialist and he's been placing media for over 10 years. He goes over a few details about GCFN and then ask me how much i'm willing to spend on targeted traffic? Keep in mind i'm a brain dead beginner to this internet stuff, I had no idea what the hek he was talking about. I told him I didn't know I had to buy traffic for my website, I figured you just make a cool site and people came flocking. He laughed and basically made me feel like I was an idiot. So in conclusion I was suckered out of another $200 that I ended up putting on my credit card.
By the time I got off the phone with this guy I was angry and felt like I got had. I told myself to suck it up because this is what business owners do, they must make an initial investment in their company in order for it to prosper. As the days went on, I had spent much time reading through the material I received in my starter kit. But it wasn't as detailed as I thought, their were many questions I had like how to change my theme or create new pages. The website had my affiliate link on it but nothing else was anything I had created myself. I had major doubts if I could even make a profitable website with what I had in front me. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, and I still had nothing accomplished except some short blog posts I wrote with no clue how to even post my affiliate link on any of them. A year later I had definitely given up on GCFN and was not happy with the company whatsoever, I felt like Mary Gertsen was just a fraud and she cared absolutely nothing about the success of her affiliate marketers.
My biases of online marketing was that it was just a gimmick, a way to milk money out of unsuspecting, uninformed people. But as years went on I still saw many others hyping the same catch phrases like "how to make 4k per month at home,'' "make $15 per hour online." Now don't get me wrong, I have placed ads on some of my other sites and turned a small profit but I can honestly admit I am nowhere near the level I want to be. I didn't think it was realistically possible to make thousands of dollars online. Even to this day I am still skeptical of companies that promote "how to make money online."
