First Steps into an Alien World
While I've been designing websites (not just websites, actually) for a long time, I never spent any time actually marketing those sites. So, social media has pretty much escaped me.
I've always been a very private person, don't like crowds of people or loud noises. It's not that I don't like technology because I absolutely do. But the entire thing about people tweeting what they had for lunch just seemed pointless, and of course following all those vapid Hollywood types is not my thing. As to following politicians, you can't believe what they say out loud, why would you believe some quick thought thrown out to the masses for popular appeasement?
So much for political views :-)
So, I'm struggling. Struggling with google+, struggling with twitter. Feeling like a voyeur on Facebook. Kyle's very patient and clear explanations are moving me in the right direction. I set up a google+ account, which was supposed to be for one of the websites, but turned out not to be (outwitted by technology). So I tried again and finally got one set up for Colloidal Silver Facts. I'm so pleased with myself, but I can't figure out how to connect with anybody yet. Guess that's my next challenge.
I signed up for twitter. I have two followers. And I really can't think of anything to tweet! How sad is that! Presumably that will change. My point with all this is that the WA community has in just a few weeks connected me, at least preliminarily, with people from all over the world. And I'm having a great time with it. I like all these people and I like sharing their struggles and offering my (limited) help. When I have a problem, I have like minds that I can turn to. So I guess it's about more than tweeting what I had for lunch!
I'd love it if you would connect with me, either place is fine :-)

Just followed you on G+. Will follow you on twitter too. Twitter can be powerful. My sister has about 1000 followers. I tweeted one mention of my website and she retweeted to some of her followers. Some of them had 3-4000 followers and their followers retweeted to their followers. I had a surge of hits on my website that week. I wish all the best and hope we can make all the adjustments we have to make to market our websites.
Wow. I just have to a) have something worth tweeting about and b) be willing to let it go (and find someone with lots of followers!) I'm willing to make adjustments and I appreciate your encouragement. Thanks for the follow on both G+ and twitter (I have to get over my tendency to call it "twit"). Getting ready to do a blog on "Perfection is the enemy of the Good" for obvious reasons :-)
WE must be kindred spirits. I agree with everything you said, but you are ahead of me. I haven't made that leap into Twitter yet. I suppose it's like getting into a cold pool, but really I'm not sure I care what you had for lunch today. LOL. Nothing personal of course. LOL. Debbi
I've had a twitter account since 2010. Never sent a tweet and never looked it. Still haven't sent anything out. Will have to wait until I have something pithy to say. Usually any comments I have about what's going on in the world are said under my breath. NSA and all...
Got you all added on my side.
"alien world" Cool way of putting it. Welcome to the fun house!
Hi Ansley. I think you should get involved with the social sharing that you want to. Kyle's training is excellent but you don't have to do everything. I'm quite a twitter fan but I haven't used it for the last year. I never use facebook and I keep forgetting to post things to G+. You can spend a lot of time making a lot of noise through social networks - so if I was use I would pick one or two and concentrate on them and forget the rest. It won't stop you being successful. :) Beverley
Thanks for the advice. I feel like it's one of those things I should do to begin with, then once I've experienced it, I can say it's not for me.
Okey the second URL is just sending you to google. I have follow you through first URL, you can follow me back if you want. I am also not a social person when it comes to these chat things so I mostly use it to advertise my website.
When I click on the second one, it takes me to my "personal" and unintended google+ account. There is nothing about me because I've never posted anything. Unfortunately a lot of the followers ended up there and I can't figure out how to add them to the business site. Any thoughts?

I feel the same way you do about social media. I do not really care what celebrity did this or who had what for lunch, but what Kyle says makes sense. It you want free exposure for your website, it's the place to be. I wish you the best with your struggles of the Gen Y social media phenomenon. Go tweet the world. I have followed you on google.
Thanks, Hutcho! I'm really trying to do what Kyle says to do. The learning curve on the social media stuff is, uh, steep. Not insurmountable of course, just steep. I'm not tweeting until the website is worth coming to...don't want to turn people off just yet.
