Porteus-ATMA

Porteus is a Free and Open Source portable operating system. I maintain an independent distribution with a few additional features on Google drive. It was initially made for my students so that they can work on a PC with their own working environment without having to install anything on it! This is very much in need when your institution has a PC and your system administrator will not allow you to install any software on it! It is also of great use when you travel and give training to students on software that their machines do not have. Even if you plan to install, then there is the whole issue of library dependence, incompatibility of OS and so forth. No worries! That was the past. I am moving porteus-atma to 64 bit platform! To tell you why, I can't resist telling you something about my past.
Long back, when I was working on my PC with 640kb memory and the new machine that can support 1Mb was released, I was thrilled! I thought about the wonderful luxury I may enjoy with 1Mb RAM. Now my laptop has 8Gb RAM!
For the past couple of days, I was struggling with a program that simply required more memory and my 32bit platform was not providing me the freedom to use all of my 8Gb. I tried rewriting the code to make it modular, but that only slowed down the process. So, finally I relaised the real bottleneck in my OS. I switched over to 64 bit and lo, I have full 8Gb for my use and my struggle with the code ended!
I am happy to share the new version with all of you. Please give me a few days to set it up. I am currently out of town - just below the Himalayas - and will be back for Christmas. Expect the 64 bit Porteus-ATMA as my New Year gift to all of you!!

Oh,Yes! I still have a Basic only computer that was run on a non-Intel processor in full working condition on one of the shelf!!. I have kept it as an evidence that I used it in the 80s!
