Marketing Isn’t Just Academic — This Is What It Looks Like in Practice

A lot of people think marketing is either:
- What you study in theory
- Or what you see online as content
But from my experience, especially after completing my Bachelor's in International Tourism (BITM) in 2020, and then my Postgrad in Marketing (2021-2022), I realised it's neither of those things on its own.
Marketing only really makes sense when you see how it's applied in real life.
In my studies, I learned frameworks, models and structured thinking.
Things like:
- consumer behaviour principles
- segmentation and targeting
- positioning strategies
- communication frameworks
In theory, it feels very structured and logical

But in practice, it is much more dynamic.
Marketing in practice isn't textbook perfect
You’re working with:
- shifting attention spans
- unpredictable audience behaviour
- fast-changing trends
- emotional decision-making
So instead of rigid rules, it becomes about adaptation.
Using the theory as a guide, not a script.
When I look at content now, I don’t just see posts.
I see applied marketing decisions like:
- how attention is being captured in the first few seconds
- what audience is being targeted without it being explicitly said
- how trust is being built over time
- how repetition reinforces messaging
It’s theory, just in motion.
One of the biggest shifts for me was understanding that people don’t always act logically.
They:
- respond to familiarity
- follow emotional cues
- trust repetition
- engage with what feels relevant in the moment
So in practice, marketing becomes less about perfect planning… and more about understanding behaviour as it happens.
