Marketing Education Changed How I Understand Attention

Before I studied marketing , attention felt random.
Some posts did well- some didn't.
It looked like luck, timing or just "good content".
That changed for me after I finished my Bachelor's in International Tourism Management (BITM) degree in 2020 , and went straight into a postgraduate diploma in marketing (2021-2022).
That's when I started seeing things differently.
What looks like a normal post is usually bullt intentionally.
The hook.
The pacing.
The message.
All of it is there to do one thing - to stop scrolling.
And once you understand that , you stop relying on guesswork.
Now I think: what will actually capture attention?
Not just visually- psychologically.

Does it create curiousity?
Does it feel relevant?
Does it make me pause?
Because attention isn't given, it is earned.
Getting attention isn't the goal - it is the entry point.
After that, the content has to:
- Hold it
- Build trust
- Deliver value.
Otherwise people move on.
Once you learn this, you can't unsee it. You notice:
- Similar hooks.
- Repeated formats that perform
- Emotional triggers that pull people in
It’s not just about one post performing.
It’s about showing up in a way people recognise.
Over time:
- your style becomes familiar
- your message becomes clear
And that’s how attention builds.
Now, when I create content, I don’t just think about what I want to say.
I think about:
- how to make someone stop
- how to keep them engaged
- how to make it stick
Because attention isn’t just a metric.
It’s the starting point of everything.
