Domain Name - Brandable or Key Words?

This is an exploratory post that hopefully others will have an opinion on.

The question is: Should a doman name use keywords (HowToLoseBellyFat.com) or should a domain name be brandable (BeerBellyBuster.com)?

I can see the appeal in using keyword terms for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If I were to look at Google Results and I saw HowToLoseBellyFat.com when I typed in "how to lose belly fat," I would be more inclined to click on that page than "Joe's Health Blog." Also, the robots.txt probably crawls the page better, right?

With that said, what happens when there are four hundred derivative websites of the HowToLoseBellyFat domain? how-to-lose-belly-fat; howtolosebellyfatfast; easywaystolosebellyfat; etc. Beer Belly Buster seems more memorable to someone who's surfing the web. It might even stay with them for a few days. Maybe they'll tell their friends the name of the site they visited, especially if there was a really good, prevalent logo and/or tagline on each page.

Just food for thought. I'm interested in others opinions, if you have the time.

Hello Ryan , Brand names might sound catchy, but unless they are backed up by a good reputation and trust they will have little effect. These things take some time to build up. So in the meantime it would help if we use profitable keywords in our domain name and in our content. I have posted a blog on this topic You can check it out here:

I love Brandable domain. Amazon doesn't sell Rivers Apple does not sell Apples, but we remember those domain because are brandables :)

Your quality content is more important but brandable would be my preference.

I like the brandable.

I like the brandable name it "catchy. I'm pretty sure you're going to do well with it:)

Yeah I thought the "catchiness" of a brand would be more useful. But it might be a long-term solution. I'm sure keyword domains have uses, but with popular phrases it's starting to get difficult.

"Contents is the key" to succeed in this business. And if you can give what your readers are looking for... then your set to go...either brandable or keywords.

totally agreed, the content or value we give out to the audience :-)

I think both can work out very well. In the long term maybe it's better to use a brandable domain name. It's just my opinion.

I agree. I wonder if a brand can grow as quickly as a keyword-rich domain name?

We can see many successful brand such as facebook, twitter, squidoo.. the most important thing is how much value we give out to the audience. just my thoughts.
