10 Dollars Minimum wage per day Vs. 10 Dollars per Hour
Hey WA fam! Today we’re diving into a money mindset topic that might seem simple—but trust me, it’s eye-opening. Let’s talk about earning $10 a day versus $10 an hour. Same number, totally different impact.
Today, we’re talking about something real money, survival, and hustle. Let’s break down what it means to earn ₱500 a day in the Philippines compared to $10 an hour abroad. Same digits, totally different worlds.
In the Philippines, a lot of workers earn around ₱500 a day. That’s roughly $8–$9 USD. It might sound small, but for many Filipinos, it’s the daily grind—jeepney drivers, market vendors, service crew, even some office workers.
So how do they survive?
- 🥣 Budget meals: Rice, canned goods, and street food keep costs low.
- 🏠 Shared living: Families often live together to split rent and utilities.
- 💡 Side hustles: Selling online, loading phones, or doing freelance gigs.
- 💪 Resilience: Filipinos are masters of stretching every peso. It’s not easy, but they make it work—with grit and grace.
💵 $10 an Hour – The Global Comparison
Now let’s flip it. In countries like the US, earning $10 an hour means $80 a day for an 8-hour shift. That’s around ₱4,500—almost 9x more than ₱500!
But here’s the catch:
- 🏠 Rent can be $1,000+ a month
- 🍔 Meals cost $10–$15 each
- 🚗 Transportation, insurance, taxes—it adds up fast
So while $10/hour sounds big, it’s not always “rich.” It’s just survivable in a high-cost economy.
🌍 Perspective Check: Is $10 Big Enough?
For a Filipino, $10 (₱560+) can mean:
- A full day’s wage
- 3 meals + transport
- A small treat for the kids
But in the US, $10 might just be a lunch combo.
So yes—$10 is big, depending on where you are. It’s all about context.
That's why I am fortunate enough that my husband Mel Waller introduced me here in WA. I' m doing my best to earn at least earn 3 Dollars a day so I could at least pay my monthly payment here in WA then I'd be happy for little extra. I know for some its a little amount but for me who lives here in the Philippines, I could buy 1 day whole meal with it.

Wen,
Thank you for sharing this. So often people here in thr US complain about the money they make and don't have.
I hope you don't mind, I shared your post on my personal Facebook page as a remind for people to be thankful for what they have and to be aware of how others in the world actually have it.

Yes for a Filipino, I am super rich but here in France, no. But even though I may not be considered rich in my own country, with what I earn I can travel anywhere in the world etc… and I am super grateful for that!! That’s huge to me!!
Hello Anne, Yes that's true because the value of your money here is higher than ours. Anyway, I am happy for you that you can travel the word and live comfortable life.
Wen
It is sad though that many Filipinos who work really hard all their lives cannot travel for instance, because it is way beyond their means and because of such huge living gaps with their value of money being lower.
Often we do forget the differences in where we live, and the cost of living differences. Thanks for sharing this information, Wen, Understanding each other better is one of the blessings of Wealthy Affiliate.
Knowing the person sharing this information makes a bigger impact to understanding the world.

I loved reading this. Yes, I still struggle getting everything I need even with $16. an hour. The biggest problem is that our wallets are really drained when something has to be fixed with the house or car. That can be hundreds of unexpected money spent. That's why I am here with Wealthy Affiliates, it helps a bit..MAC.
I can relate with you mac, thanks for the comment.
