Hello. I'm Robert and have so many interests. It gives me great pleasure helping people. I have taught school, as well as traveled to several countries. No matter where I go, people are people and want to feel connected to something. Traveling and interacting with various cultures truly has broadened my perspective of the world.

I love reading about many things, especially classical literature, music, nature, and whole food plant-based nutrition. I also love hiking, gardening, and making hand-made crafts such as cloth dolls and animals. Woodcarving is an interest of mine too; so is illustrating children's books. I am working on my third storybook I have written and illustrated, but have yet to have them published.

I also have a small Etsy shop where I make handmade dolls and animals.

I want to make a difference in the world, and look forward to hearing from you.

Enjoyed reading your profile, Robert. You're right. We do have similar interests. My mother used to make soft sculpture dolls, sock monkeys, and had taken the doll doctor class. I have an idea for "Meador's Monkeys", and have the pattern, but have not had time to pursue making any. Hey, maybe that could be my second website!

That sounds great. Perhaps that could be your next website. What is your niche right now?

That is great! My niche is Storybook dolls. I make dolls and write about them and the stories behind fairy tales, etc. I make dolls of famous or classic stories.

That sounds like so much fun, Robert. Are they porcelain or soft fabric? I assume you will you be selling them on your website? I'd like to take special orders for my quilts, which I tailor to the person's interests, colors, and passions. But I don't know how to do that, since each one takes so long. Carol

They are soft dolls (cloth). I have a shop on Esy.com. I eventually want them on my site here. Eventually, I will get to that in the training here. I have some items that are made-to-order items that are made after order. If they want a certain dress or shirt made from a certain pattern fabric, they may pick one. So you could do something similar to that with quilts, where they can pick a design or particular fabrics/colours.

They're adorable, Robert. Do you make your own patterns? My mother made one similar to your rag doll. She had several faces embroidered and ready to be stuffed that I found in her things when we moved her down south to take care of her. I sold them on Ebay, and bought one of the finished dolls back from the girl who bought them. Gave her to Mom for Christmas that year.

I never make 2 quilts alike. They are all named, numbered, and signed, so I guess you could call them collectible folk art. I don't usually follow a pattern, but have a rough idea of what I'll do. I usually have a theme and let the fabric tell me what to do with it.
I have kept pics and a record of the name, number, and who I gave it to. Most of the ones I've made were gifts. I kept one that I called "Meador's Masterpiece" that was made from scraps of different people's quilts. I started out making a crazy quilt, but I'm so compulsive, I cut all the pieces straight!

I'll send you some pics when I have a little more time. My pics on my computer are not very well arranged. They're supposed to be according to dates, but that doesn't work well. I have several new ones I transferred from my camera to the computer a couple weeks ago, and I can't find any of them.

Guess I'd better hit the sack. It's been a long day, and I have a lot to do tomorrow (er, make that later today!)

Thanks for your thoughtful message. You really are a creative person. I suppose your quilts are all one-of-a-kind. Each one should probably just be listed as a separate item. I know one lady on Etsy. All she makes are stuffed bunny rabbits. Each one looks different (different colours, outfits, etc.) She has names for all of them.
I have many patterns for these dolls that I have got from various places--mostly elderly people who had old patterns in their attic. I like the older old-fashioned look of the vintage dolls. I also don't have copyright issues with older patterns (not that I would have much of a problem at this point because they are not mass produced at this stage of the game). Some of the patterns I have made myself though. It is a mixed bag, but I have a storybook theme (dolls from fairy tales, nursery rhymes, popular storybooks, etc.)
Look forward to seeing pictures of your work. I save my pics under various folders so they are easier to find (e.g. garden stuff, animal pics, craft ideas, cloth dolls, etc.) Have a blessed day.

Thanks, Robert. I appreciate your comments. I have some patterns that were my mother's and the doll doctor textbook. Maybe someday I'll put them to use. Sending you a PM.

I named my site Dolls and More. This name was concerning to some because the name seems to suggest too broad of a niche. I sell handmade cloth dolls and animals. They are all basically dolls--some people with clothes, some animals. Do you find this too broad? Should I rename my site to something like Cloth Dolls and Animals? If so, how do you rename the site and see if the url is available? Where do I go to do this if so?

Thanks. I won't be able to do Premium at this time and am worried I won't be able to communicate in 3 days from now because the intro. advantages as a new member will have expired. Is there a way I can at least get an email or some other way to ask questions, even if it isn't as good as Premium?
Reply
RobertDoyle Premium
What will I be able to do after the 7 days is expired? Will I still have access to the training courses? I can still send queries I am told. Where do I send queries?

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

I make handmade dolls, animals, and clothes for them. What about Dolls 'N More? Can I change the name if I change my mind? For example, I called it Dolls and More, but perhaps Dolls 'N More is better.
Reply
Kyle Premium
You ideally want to be more specific, doll's and "MORE". The more part is what I am concerned about as it creates a certain level of ambiguity. Doll clothing is a huge niche, same with animal clothing. I would head in one direction or the other and then down the road you can have a website for both.

Focus on just ONE website and create success with that before diversifying and creating multiple niche websites.

It only takes ONE website in one niche to be very successful online. I usually find that folks that try to do too much at once (focus on several niche websites) end up in a state of mediocrity because it can be overwhelming and you don't really ever become the expert in just one niche.

It is the experts (specialists) that create long term, successful businesses in any niche.
Reply
RobertDoyle Premium
When I thought of Dolls and More, I was mainly thinking of cloth dolls and animals. They are all basically dolls; some are just people with clothes and others are animals. Is this still too broad?
Reply
Kyle Premium
Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)
Reply
RobertDoyle Premium
These are a few dolls I make. I want to be sure I understand you correctly. Are you saying that these are not the same niche because some are people and some animals? So I should not have animals and human dolls on the same site? I was also thinking of storybook theme like Storybook Dolls. This would include animals and people(like Goldilocks and three bears dolls) if I went in that direction--like creating fairy tale dolls. Just not sure. Well, here are a few samples. Any advice now that I have shared more details?
Reply
Kyle Premium
Ah yes, these are the same niche and those are awesome! I though you meant actual animals. So this is certainly a direction that you can head with your niche, the original idea you had. :)
