Life check in
Without unpacking every detail, the past few weeks have brought up some heavy, unexpected family stuff. People I’d cut ties with decades ago—three, to be exact—have suddenly reappeared in raw and emotional ways.
Then my daughter—really the only thread I’ve kept from that old life—brought me news that hit harder than I expected. A 14-year-old relative, someone I never got the chance to meet… and never will now.
We weren’t close—not even acquainted—but it stirred something. Not just grief, but reflection. Regret. The ache of what-ifs. That moment where your old life crashes into the one you’ve built, and suddenly you’re carrying both, wondering what’s yours to hold and what’s long gone.
It’s made me think about legacy… about the things we shield our kids from, the lessons we learned the hard way and hope they’ll never need to.
To the parents—and grandparents—out there: I hope this serves as a nudge to notice the quiet moments. To stay present. To remember that raising kids isn’t just a task—it’s a daily, sacred responsibility. One that can be both deeply grounding and emotionally exhausting.
Closer to home, we’ve also been navigating a different kind of challenge. A young one in our care—still so early in his story, still figuring out right from wrong. It's not easy. Especially when you're holding space for grief and trying to guide someone toward becoming their best self.
There’s no handbook for this. Just steady hands, quiet perseverance, and the kind of patience that sometimes runs thin—but keeps showing up anyway.
So I’m asking:
Has anyone here walked away from a past life—family, identity, a version of yourself—only to have it resurface unexpectedly?
And when it did… how did you handle it?

Hi Robert
I suspect that we all have our stories, albeit not necessarily as dramatic as yours.
Somebody once said something like: It's not what happens that matters. It's how we react to what happens that makes the biggest difference.
;-)
Richard
Thanks Richard, I think that's what I needed to hear. "It's not what happens that matters. It's how we react to what happens that makes the biggest difference.". Take time to contemplate rather than reacting in the moment. Appreciate the advice.
One thing I have observed over my years on this planet is that when it comes to families, there is never perfection. There are always tensions and disagreements.
I have cast away a family member just because I grew up with the P.I.T.A., only to have him show up again. I give him a chance again, and he starts all over.
Now I just deal with him through text messages, which I can answer or ignore! 😁
Solid plan, Howard. Especially on bad days, I'll head out with the dogs and leave the phone in the house.
I’ll inbox you Roy. You have my thoughts and prayers for this heart ache. My situation is a bit long and personal.
Amen brother! Hardship I can deal with but emotional hardship, the game's changed. There's no rulebook for that.
