Find out what your competition is doing online
I am thinking about the idea of guest posting at the moment. It's just a thought, and I wanted to look at what sorts of sites I could be targeting. So I want to know how big they are. Naturally I don't want to be over ambitious, but I don't want something that is the same size as my website.
I came across a tool you may or may not have heard about called www.similarweb.com.
It gives you a great insight into what other people in your industry might be doing.
All you do is type in the website you are interested in analysing and it gives you the number of visits per month, alexa rank, the advertising it does, where most of the site visitors come from, ie social media, paid traffic etc.
It also tells you who are the biggest referrers (backlinks) and a selection of other similar websites that you could look into.
There is a paid option on similar web, but to be honest you get quite a lot for free, I don't think you would need it.
It might help you work out what could also work for you and give you some ideas? For example if many of the similar websites in your niche are getting all their traffic from Twitter, perhaps working on this could help you.
You might see in the similar sites section a load of key influencers that you can also follow on social media to learn a bit more about what they do.. Follow the masters and all that.
I hope it helps?

No problem at all. It has a quite a user friendly interface which I liked over other similar tools.
This is a big help. I was just about to use a paid version but was skeptical. Thank you for this valuable information and showing us a new light on this.

Brilliant tool, thanks for sharing Ruth! Just for kicks I typed in my websites & got this msg: Unfortunately we don’t have enough traffic data for this website… yet." No surprises there. Havemuch more work to do!
