Dog Got Skunked

Well Hello WA Community

Unfortunately, I am just having a bad week. Yesterday my dog got herself skunked, she has a crazy pray drive and just loves to go after whatever she can. It's not normal for skunks to be around here. Never even seen one before besides the zoo but I have smelled them around in other areas.

Anyways I have tried everything I can to get rid of the skunk smell from her and the house including buying two different de-skunker shampoos and nothing. I know that tomatoes juice is supposed to help but I am trying to find other options before I make that massive mess.

I have also called the groomer but they are not available to take her in until Monday.

So if this has ever happened to anyone before can you please give me some advice on how you got rid of the smell and I'm really hoping it's not tomato juice lol But if it is go ahead and comment. She's the white dog shown below.

Thanks for reading this I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

ALL free and clear laundry detergent. Why do you ask?
Get the odor removing one, Rachel.
And because it has no dyes and no perfumes it is good for your dog, and for you.
Remember Tide detergent, the really strong smelly kind? I think the scent could go unabated for a year!
In people, lots of allergy-like effects are caused by synthetic fragrances in soaps, deodorant, cheap perfumes, etc.
White Musk was found to cause brain tumors and was pulled off the market, White synthetic Musk that is, and it was sold in head shops and Loma Linda's little grocery store, where I bought some, and then threw it out!

Now our dog's olfactory capabilities are hundreds of times more sensitive than a human's, except in the case of skunk!
Going Greek word epiluo kind of like out of their minds in the thrill of the hunt over the game being hunted is all that they can think of!

The instinct ( later it did stink) but your dog was on a "high" on the focus of the hunt and nothing else mattered!
Dog is also much more sensitive to synthetic fragrance, especially if it is down on the floor, or near their noses, like a glade fragrance warmer, or such.
My Rikki, a medium-large dog started having seizures, his mouth clamping and unclamping rapidly. If his tongue was in the way, he would have chewed it off, because there was no controlling this.
The night before I had put a glue trap for mice down on the floor. I didn't know until I opened it that it was very strongly scented with FAKE vanilla scent. When Rikki had that first seizure, I started thinking, well what exactly is fake Vanilla? It's in cheap ice cream and hundreds of products. It is Piperinol a substance used to kill Lice. It causes seizures in pets, and kills lice.
Wow, now what to do for Rik? I'm afraid to even feed him so he doesn't bite off his tongue!
Mommy's charcoal for mommy when she has flu, food poisoning, etc. It absorbs 40 times its weight in toxin, so said the Walgreens $12 box. But the aquarium kind is the same stuff for way cheaper and more of it, no capsule. from the aquarium area in Walmart. I added it smashed up to dust and the silymarin, which are milkweed caps to cleanse the liver of my Rik, mixed in tuna, and other tasty stuff like organ meats, 4 X a day, 10days. then reduced it to twice a day for the rest of the month.
Scared me so much those seizures!
I am very sensitive to scents as well after allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Can't be hugged by anyone with it on them, oI'll be dry heaving. So anyway, something to consider for our pets.
So many of them die from cancer, but now we can all be more aware that their sensitivities are heightened, in ways that ours are not.

That’s really scary that your dog started having seizures. I’m glad u were able to find something that helped. The smells pretty much gone now at least in the house. One side of her still smells a little but I’m giving it some time. I stressed her out to much she chew a big chunk of fur off her leg and gave herself a sore. Which she does when she stressed. But I’m definitely going to buy some of that detergent.
I don’t have hardly any scent (Anosmia) I can only smell really potent stuff and I could only smell the skunk if I were outside and came inside but would get use to it. However my husband and daughter could smell it really good. But like you with smells, since I can’t really smell anything certain chemicals are so strong it makes me incredibly sick like going from nothing to something really strong. Especially chemicals, my last job I worked around strong paint like smells with no ventilation, so strong it would burn my eyes all day everyday. Thats why I think I have it and now if I smell house paint it almost starts giving me ptsd symptoms from working there. But there’s way more to that story.

But thanks for the advice like always, your so helpful and wonderful!

Dr. Eric Berg search on YT for info, he has information for your nose, it's the skin mineral zinc. for amount and duration, longer for women. and if that is not enough, add B1 Thiamine in a particular form called Benfotiamine. Probably have to search for that one. It's for neuropathy in the sinuses, which may have happened from the high vapor pressure of toxic substances in unventilated areas, Lookup Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome for more understanding. And Berg tells you dosage and times per day. And add amazing Alpha Lipoic Acid to restore life to it. Hey if it can help regenerate other organs, why not this.
I take B1 to keep congestive heart failure away. I never want that again.

Oh no, Rachel! Hang in there!😲🙀

Scroll down to the last one, that seems like the best fit for the situation.

Thanks so much for finding that for me. It’s gonna come in handy but man it’s gonna be hard. Everything I have read so far says that if it dries it’s extremely hard to get out and I know it dried because I thought a shrunk had just sprayed outside and it was late when I let her in. So it wasn’t till the next day that I realized it was actually coming from her. And I bathed her immediately then but it didn’t do anything. I’m going to try all this stuff tomorrow and I will let u know. Thanks again!

You're welcome, Rachel. Yes, it's harder to remove when it's been there for a while. Hopefully it at least helps to bring the smell down some. I have smelled skunks from a distance, that's some serious stuff. I can't imagine what it would be like up close.

Jorge

Then again, you may want to go very light on the hydrogen peroxide or not use it at all. Let's just say it might alter the color a a bit.

*** hi Rachel !

Very skunkie?

Did she get a direct spray or did she kind of run through the scent?

Some years ago, my golden retriever and I were walking doing our usual early morning walk and she was up ahead ... I thought isn't that delightful, she's playing with the 'black and white doggie' friend!

Well, indeed, the black and white doggie friend turned out to be a skunkie-skunk and despite not being directly sprayed ... the scent was all over the forest air ... my golden stank and my clothing also got scented! ...

So back at home, it was the 'tomato paste' job in the tub for my golden as I didn't have tomato juice around ... and then a doggie bubble bath after that ...

Yes, plenty of bathing & clean-up ... basically had to toss my clothing away ... and dunked myself as well!

All to say with this short story -- please don't allow your puppy to play with a seemingly 'black 'n white doggie!' ... in the wilds! ...

We had another adventure with a baby porci-pick and that story will be for another day ...

All the best, and yes, a few baths should do it ... cheerio ... :))

I’m pretty sure she got sprayed directly, but didn’t c it happen. One part of her was way more potent then the rest and I could c a color change on one side. I thought she had just rolled in something but the whole outside smelled of shrunk so bad it made me gag and she was outside at the time.

.... if she's outside and perhaps if you have a garden hose on at the ready ...

... then slather on the tomato sauce/juice/paste or 'de-skunking product' ... and leave for a few mins and then hose off thoroughly ... she should be able to shake the excess water off her fur ...

careful & gentle with her skin -- may be delicate and too much of a good thing could be drying ...

anyway, check closely her skin for any irritation, excoriation or such ...

what a frost!

well, your puppie will likely have this as a memorable experience! ... and hopefully, unlikely to have it repeated any time soon ...

I thought about doing it outside but it’s below 40 and she terrified of the hose normally yells and barks like we r beating her. She’s very dramatic lol
