Success to become Phlebotomist

Share

The first question which comes in my mind is, “What is Phlebotomy?” I refer the word Phlebotomy which is also called/known as venipuncture. It is the surgical puncture of a vein in order to draw blood from a patient through medical needles. It is done by the qualified phlebotomist. There is a process here step-by-step how to collect the blood from the patient and that blood is go through different department as I can say Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology, Serology, Blood Bank for the testing and then after the results/outgoing result is studied by a physician to determine the health of a patient. Like I say before about Blood Bank . Here in blood bank the blood ( matching ) is also be used to another patient if someone is in need.

Here I show a very nice picture about the carry tray/basket which includes everything what needed for the phlebotomist such as :

  • Biohazard waste containers, sharp containers
  • Biohazard spill kit
  • Blood cultures bottles , plastic vacuum tubes ( different color code tubes ), tourniquets
  • Tapes, alcohol wipes, iodine, bandages and gauze
  • Butterfly setup collection with safety needles
  • Dermal puncture device, tube racks

After everything is setup ( requirement stuffs ) the phlebotomist is ready get the blood draw.

Here are the steps or procedure how phlebotomist collect the blood :

Procedure
  • First of all, phlebotomist verify the patient’s identity ( whether the right patient ) and preparing the necessary equipment. Then the phlebotomist washes his or her hands and/or places on gloves.
  • The patient’s arm is then placed on a flat surface so that it is will comfort to patient.
  • After selecting a suitable vein (distal and accessible vein), the phlebotomist applies a tourniquet just a few inches above the selected infusion site and the patient is usually instructed to clench his or her hand.
  • Then the site is cleaned with alcohol pad and allowed to dry before inserting the needle. Once the blood has begun flowing into the collection tube, the tourniquet is removed and the patient is told to relax his or her hand.
  • Once the required samples are collected, the needle is withdrawn and gauze is firmly placed and held over the infusion site.
  • The tube(s) are then labeled and any contaminated materials are disposed properly. (needles are throw in sharp container)

The videos below show a simple way to collect the blood samples.
