My friend wants to retire in Costa Rica. How can she make this happen?

My friend at work is 62, and she's trying to get all of her options together so that she can retire in Costa Rica. She heard it's a great place for retirees from America, but she worries about insurance, and having the money to afford to live there...since SS kinda screws us every way we can. I would just love to hear anyone else's experience who has made this move. Please, if you have ANYTHING to say about this subject, ANY information helps. She has started blogging, not w/ WA (maybe one day?), but blog aside, she is wondering how she might be able to do this. Thanks in advance!

Hi Rini. Check out International Living...I subscribe to their emails and they have a TONNE of information on how to retire to different countries all over the world.

Thanks!!

Hi RiniRogers. There are several ways for your friend to get residency, which will also give her access to medical attentions through the Costa Rican Social Security system (CCSS). I was going to send you some links on helpful blogs but the system doesn't allow for links. Your friend can email me at ivo at godutchrealty dot com and with pleasure I will send her the links, no pressure!

Thanks! I'll give her the info!

Hi! I'll probably retire in CR because I live here! LOL... It's great to hear people are talking about it worldwide... yes, indeed, it is a great place.

It's a little expensive actually (compare to other Latin America places) but for some people, this is not an issue. I know many cases of people living and working here after retirement because there are so many things to do.

Tell her to write me: mvalverdec@gmail.com and maybe I can answer some questions she may have.

Regards,

Marco V.

Thank so much! I will give her your email.

She has heard that many Americans retire there to get away from the extreme capitalism. What do you and other locals thing of this? Does it seem like a good idea?

Well I know many Americans and Europeans are living their retirement here in CR, most of them look for the beach (almost all of them) because is quite.

Many put a local business like a restaurant or mini-markets, or similar to find something to do.

We are used to them :) and they are welcome to come.

A few months ago, some fellow WAers contacted me to provide some advice about that... I send them this conversation link so you may (or your friend) get feedback of their experience, directly from someone that already though of it.

I hope they still connect to WA and see my message.

most retirees live in the Central Valley where it is much cooler and cheaper. Atenas and Grecia are attractive locations for retirees. You will find relatively few retirees in the beach areas, too warm and they get bored after a while
